Hi all,

Here is a new cartoon style character I’m working on. Would like to get some feedback on her so far.

Thanks All

I started the hair it's pretty rough ATM. I wanted to do poly hair but with a little more detail. So as always C&C are always welcome.

the forehead seems a bit flat to me. Likea sheer drop-off

Hum.. I think the only thing that maybe you could change are the ears... the bottom part seems quite short... But.. since it's a cartoon character maybe it was a deformation you wanted? And.. it's true that we do not really see them with the hair over them...
Well... over all I pretty much like her!! Really cool! Will you give her a body??

Hi all,

I finally got some time to work on this character again. I started her body, but I am not happy with it yet. So if anyone has any suggestions I'll be happy to hear them.

Maybe try making her chest a bit wider to make her more feminine?

I decided to put her in a flight suit inspired by the amine “Last Exile”.

cartoony girls rule!

first of all this looks like a great start, nice and clean topology! the flight suit looks cool and i'm liking the white stripe thingy. i think you have a strong model that is also animation friendly (you are going to animate her, right? RIGHT?!?!)

here's some feedback and thoughts:

i kinda agree with bbob about making the torso bulge out more, though looking at your latest picture it's not as apparent. i think part of it has to do with adding the cloth detail to make the over all look more interesting thus the extra curves aren't needed to make interesting shapes and stuff(hehe, sorry i'm going off on a theoretical tangent).

back on track, the back shot of the butt, it sticks out a bit, maybe have it tapper back a little slower or maybe make the arch in the back a little less intense.

and if you got any concepts, post them up so i can get a feel of what you're aiming for, since i'm not sure if you're doing some things on purpose or not.

alrighty, keep it up! i'm looking forward to the progress!

Nice stuff.

Pull the chin back a tad along with the lower lip.

You can keep the pointy chin but flesh out the area between the cheek and the chin point in the front view.

Get the hair line down. High foreheads are a sign of advanced age.

Compliments, it's coming great!
Maybe the face is too much flat...

Thank you all for the great comments and advice.

Here is a small update, trying to get her arms and legs portioned to her body. This was done before I readied the comments, so my next post should reflect all the great advice.

Hey Remy, I really like how this one is shaping up. I'm curious, did you use any tutorials to build this Character? Or, could you recommend any to learn this type of modeling? I've been trying to find some myself.

ah, the Last Exile suit...

What kinda enviroment are you planning for her? Vanship or something?

JYoung

The lower body proportions seem off to me. The upper leg looks too long when compared to the lower leg, and I think the butt shape/size could use some tweaking.

I do plan on doing an animation with her and I am toying with a "dogfight" idea with a couple of "Vanship" style fighters. Even thou I am using Range Murata "Last Exile" as the inspiration for this piece I am not trying to recreate any of his stuff exactly the way he drew them.

And again thank you all for the great comments and advise, I am really surprise by the reaction I have gotten so far on this character.

Hi, very nice!
But I think the coloration in the face should be somewhat less "pinkish". Like around the mouth and the nose, the coloration is pretty. But on the forehead and the neck, for me, it seems as though she put that makeup she has on her eyes there too o.O...
Otherwise, pretty cool!
And I love the suit!

Hi all, I got a little time to work on this character again, I went ahead and tried a pose with her. And yes I rip off the idea from one of Range Murata Last Exile illustrations. Enjoy and C&C are always needed.

The way I did the hair for her was by first taking the polygons that made the top of her head, copy them, and then extruded them out a little to make the base and the hair line. Then I made the other pieces separately by using a tool in Modo call Sketch Extrude. (other 3d packages have same type of tool) The tools allows me the rough out the shape then go back in it and edit the curve it creates, then refine the shape and the flow. And the last step is tweaking the vertexes to get the look I was going for.

Hope this helps.

Looks nice. Her eyes kind of look like alien eyes, but with proper texturing it should look fine.

Hey man, your character is definitely coming along nicely, i like her style.
The only thing that i can comment on so far is her lips, i think they could be a shaped better to add even more interest to her face

Here is another update; I feel I'm getting close to finishing her. I need to add more elements to the background, to make this scene more interesting.

I like it. But the position of the hand doesn't feel natural at all. You should modify this, I think

First and foremost, you've done an excellent job, congratulations!

And Phantomworkshop, you asked about a tutorial, I see it got overlooked. You really should check out the Joan Of Arc tutorial. It's a fantastic tutorial, a great learning tool, and you'll be more than happy with your results!

Is This Modo??????????

Yes, I use Modo, for pretty much everything theses day.

But I did used bones in Lightwave to pose her (also to eventully animate her), and then used “Save Trans Object” so she keeps the pose. Then bought her back into Modo to clean up, and render.

Hey man I would first like to say that the final image is well presented. The character is done very well. My only critique would be for me as an animator is that I think the pose seems little stiff for the character. Also, her left wrist seems broken do to the fact that it is posed flat. I would raise the hand slight and angle it for a more relaxed pose. Other then that I look forward to seeing some of the animations of this character.

Nice- She's good- and her butt is definately not too BIG- heck, could be bigger if ya want- My only crit is that the last render seems grainy. Other than that *****
