View Full Version : Rendering Tecniques - I need a hand!
plaguelord 01-24-2003, 02:22 AM Hi, somebody can tell me some how I can improve my render's?
actually I use 3dmax 4, and brazil. I know all the advantages in max 5 with radiosity and advanced lighting. But I need a solution for 3dmax 4. All my render have the "plastic look", and when I try to make a dirty material, using blend or mixing bitmaps, it's worse!
I know the half of my mistakes are in the material editor, and maybe the other half in the illumination. well, I hope somebody can give me some trick or advices!
Thanks in advance!
pd: sorry about my english! :D

Hi plaguelord, I have a couple of tips that might help. First for the dirty materials, you are going to need to make a B/W map to affect the specularity of the dirty areas. White will keep the shine, black will dull the areas. This can probably be done by desaturating your color map (if you are using 1), in photoshop. Put that map in the spec slot, and play around. As far as things looking plastic, maybe you are using too much specularity, with a renderer like Brazil, some good reflections will do the job... without CG looking specular highlights. Also, read up on lighting, there is a good 3 point lighting tutorial somewhere in this section of the forum I believe. Hope I waas of some help:beer:

yup, as the man said, try mapping specular...
also consider using bump maps slightly as it will spread your specular reflection arround...
also you must experiment with your lights. try to put some fine orange/brown/yellow noise map to one of your spots as a projector map, you will notice interesting effect.
avoid using metal shaders, and maybe try avoid these simple phongs and blins for main objects. put Raytrace material instead as it will look much better.
it's very difficult to give ya some concrete advices as we do not see what u r working on... maybe u can post some image here?

Are you in a rush or do you just want to learn... cause I got some cool tips if you're interested.
Pick your renderer:
Brazil
PRMan
BMRT and MaxMan
MAX
mentalRay
I don't know finalRender or Lightwave's. (Would like to though)

Hi all, well, now I’m using brazil, but maybe in don't need brazil to achieve the result, I think the scanline can do well to.
My first problem, when I activate the skylight in brazil, all my colors and bright in the textures change too much. Now I want to get a good old armor material. But for my project, (a medieval warrior) I need this,
cloth material
skin material
hair material
hard leather material
and obviously, the armor material.
I put two image, the right is brazil without skylight, and the left with skylight.
thanks
just in case ....
do you put a ground in your scene ???
if not, you should !!! in brazil there is even a auto-ground (Idon't remember the name of the option)
the ground will stop the sky light ray coming from ground and you will get better result I guess ...
of course there's also many ather stuff to setup for you armor ...
gold is reflective ... raytrace or fake with bitmap environement reflection.
good luck...

I use the default ground of brazil, but now I'll try a few objects around the armor and render it again. thanks!
