View Full Version : stretching a rope between 2 characters
snot_nose 01-24-2003, 01:59 AM Hello people.
i'm trying to connect a rope between 2 characters.
the rope is a renderable spline and has a lock in the middle and is splitted to 2. i applied linked Xforms to the 2 characters and to the lock in the middle and applied a flex modifier to the rope.
u can see it on the animation i'm working on now at
http://members.lycos.co.uk/talportfolio/zoomoutdrama.avi
my problem is when i want to stretch my rope.
i tried to apply an edit spline on the top of my stack and to stretch the bezier handles by my self, but when i press animate it's not being animated, i guess because of all the modifiers in the bottom of the stack
i hope it make sense what i'm trying to say, if not you are welcome to download the animation, and u can see my problem in the end of the animation.
tanx ahead

I downloaded the animation and I still don't have a clue what is going on or what you are trying to do. It's way too dark to see anything.

Looks like a job for dynamics.
Go get Simcloth.
Make Hulls.
Make a 3 sided cylinder, and attach the "Rope" at each end.
Hit the Run Simulation button, and should be cool.
For more about Dynamics, you can DL my video/html tutorial on the subject. It will be available soon.
If you have Max 5, use reactor's rope simulator.

id say use bones, apply an ik to them and have it pick a taget. the target will make it look like its hanging down, and the ik will make it look like its being pulled straight out.

3dzealot: hmm, simcloth might work there, but isn't it like applying flex?
sakuramboo: about the ik i don't know if that would work. what kind of IK would you apply to it, standard?!
i tried before that to use a control spline and to skin the rope to the control spline, but it didn't really work.
anyway what i did now was: making a key frame for the flex modifier that gives it a 0 value,
went to the bottom of the modifier and animated the strech by myself.
i've updated the scene so u can d/l again to see that if you want, now it is also brighter then before, but i still need to work on the lights, and other things (also the rope)/
i was thinking
all these plugins and other shortcuts that suppose to make out work easier and faster but the truth is that i spend most of my time trying to figure out all those technical things (something like 80% of it maybe), wich means it just make it slower, maybe that's because i'm still a beginner or maybe i should just ANIMATE and that's it.
like now i will learn simcloth, but after that something new will come out wich will suppose to be better and i will need to learn it again. instead of learning just to animate, i mean classical animators would make the rope stretch by themselves, don't they?
i don't know about simcloth but most of the plugins usually limit us and have lots of bugs.
so what do you think?

Hey,
i tried the simcloth 2.05 solution (wich contradicts everything i said on the last post  )
it worked fine, only that if i used it all over my scene, it CRASHED.
so i got simcloth 3 instead and it looks like it's missing some parameters (like the CANCEL button, attach, bond...)
so what does it mean? should i get a different version, or should i try a different method then simcloth?
