Ok all, I know that it's always been a pain to get a shaded wireframe render with Max. Alot of copying the mesh and scaling it, masks and preview renders...Blech.

I finally solved the mystery...I'm probably not the first, but this is obscure enough to be not widely known...Check this out, it does'nt require UV mapping or anything...very cool:

Make a new material.

Make it face-mapped

Now create a new gradient ramp type map in the diffuse channel.

Use these settings:

Map should look something like this

nice trick, but i do hope you don't mean that you're doing this just to get a shaded wireframe in your viewport ??
cause if so, then turning on edged faces is all . . .

but for rendering a shaded wireframe, this is an ace trick ;)

Op well how about that. Almost painfully simple, but hey, many good ideas often are :)

I've used this method in the past. The only thing to be aware of its that your line widths are dependant on the size of your polygons; larger polys will have fatter edges than smaller ones.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...

That's right, both you mods jump on me at once. :D

Equinoxx : You're an evil man...:D

Matt: Thanks fro the tip, I'll remember that.

Anyway, it's just a little workaround. I figured it out last night, and just though I'd post it.

Thanks for looking, all!
