It's a start, but this is really a WIP not a finished peice. It really should be in the WIP form.
You should start out with some better/stronger reference for the object and the materials. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Fifa_world_cup_org.jpg
It's not just a sphere with some blobs holding it up! The world's is etched to look liek waves in the water, not on the landmasses, Also your landmases are stretched to look about 2X the correct size! You need to work on the modeling and improve the definistion of the figures holding up the world.
Texturing wise what you've got looks a bit like toffee when it's fresh in the factory. There's no real tarnish on this, and it's just plate on the surface, but what youv'e got looks closer to a metalic paint. It seems to have a fresnel and be colored by the light rather than by the reflection (as shiny metal really is).
The image your'e using for lighting should be higher resoltuion, it looks low res and blurry which ends up looking - to be honest nasty. Drop the ambient occlusion and spend some time lighting it properly, giving a proper focus to it. Right now it looks like it's floating off the surface. All of this needs to be resolved.
It's a fair start, but it needs a lot more work.
