Brian,
Very good job. I love the entire thing. I can't wait to see the animation all textured and rendered out. Very nice work. It also has some really cool camera angle (IE: Shot looking down on the guy running down the alley with the monsters going down the walls) That shot really draws me in. Great story/concept too! This is a top notch short. Keep up the good work.

01-24-2003, 04:49 PM
wow. awesome stuff. i kind of liked the wirefram look actually.. ;)
for me personally it somehow seemed to be a bit too fast though... not in terms of animation but rather editing. that you should leave some shots a bit longer for maybe half a second or so.. especially towards the end
unlikelyhero
01-24-2003, 10:12 PM
stimpy, grayscale thanks! i've had a lot of input and help from the staff and fellow classmates here at VFS in vancouver. the reel is actually edited to the song "spiders" by system of a down, changing the timing wouldn't be to easy but i agree totally. a lot of shots need to be longer. thanks again for the replies, more please!!! :p
if the file is too large i can try and post another smaller one?? let me know.

01-25-2003, 09:45 PM
that is very nice. i like the shot where they chase him while he is running trough the station.
also the shot where they climb down to him is brilliantly done. very smooth and natural.
got a crit for the beginning though. it looks like one of the creatures is floating because his feet isn't on the ground. it doesnt stay foot. but wel in the whole animation it doesn't make a differance. i like it eitherway..
nice.
greets niels

Nice looking animation. The movement of the creatures is great, especially when they crawl on the buildings.
The angle of the girl's neck looks like it could be off a tad in the last shot....of course it may only seem that way because of the wireframe.
Can't wait to see an update.

That's awsome, I watched it 5 times in a row. Did you animate each moster individualy in the shots with tons of them? How'd you do it? Keep at it, I can't wait to see it finished.

Man, this is going to be good. You've got like 2 months left to finish this right? And if you get the vfs scholarship on top of that, you'll have 2 more months. Damn!!! I'm amazed you put so much work into this movie, I got bored of mine and slowed down after 2 months into it.

Nice overall feeling. Love the track too.
It should turn out to be a nice piece.
IMO Some of the shots need some reworking , on the animation side, when I get a few more spare minutes I will go back through it again and point out which ones.
What discipline are you focusing on for a career?
Can't wait to see more. Later...

Great camera work and very elegant, well-timed cuts with the music. The looked like something I would see on Sci-Fi channels indi film program. Not sure if they put it anymore (dont have cable) but once you finish it your should send it to them and I believe tech tv does a 3d film segment also... great work..

swadepgh- i'll look into her neck, i wanted it to be a bit exaggerated for at taht point she's  dead. david- i'll get on that run cycle right away;) bentllama- i'd like to redo the posing on the human characters, i'm focused on animation, but i enjoy all aspects of 3d. can't wait to sit down and crank out a few models. E.Z. Schwartz-all creatures are animated individually, xsi 3.0 is amazing at handling a lot of them, but some will be composited in. Pants01- your reel rocks dude!!! lildragon- i got to say again, the staff and classmates at VFS are awesome. i'll be finished in a month. thanks again for the replies!!

Holy God! Awesome! I have been struggling to come up with ideas for my own short film that I have to produce next quarter, this should serve as some interesting inspiration =)
Bad thing is, why did you have to use System of a Down?! WORST. BAND. EVER. I had to turn the music off, that's how bad I hate em =) Awesome animation tho! Please get the whole thing rendered out so we can watch it in all its glory (though I suspect the scene with like, 50 creatures, will take quite some time for each frame =).

Btw please give us some insight on how you animated all those beast! And did you write any scripts to make them scale the walls like that? Cause if you keyframed all of that I  to you. But a script would make more sense, since all you would have to do then is make the walk cycle and draw a path :)
Keep it up man

Comments and suggestions?:D
Suggestions!: Make sure you finish it!
Comments!: It gave me flashbacks of playing Resident Evil 2. The creatures remind me of the Licker.:scream: Also, if I was on an empty train, I'd be sitting down :p, but the way you already have it suits the flow of the story better, so ignore that.

Great work! yeah, i think the music goes along very well to the story, flows well. I really like the animation of the creatures. i'm sure your gonna go back and fix it , but i just wanted to point out the mesh of the main character on the shot right before they show him with his and around the girls neck, its kinda twisted. very original and well done!:)

wow, thanks for the feedback, lildragon- no scripts used for this, everything is keyed. i like the feel of slight differences in timing and pose with the creatures, even though i guess it's hard to focus on any one. i really can't change the song, there is editing to it of course, and it's SOAD??? granted i've heard that song enough to make me sick...but it still rocks :buttrock: it will be finished, no doubt about that. tubby- thanks for the comment, i agree totally. Judge Drury- in original storyboards he was sitting down ;) i thought he looked a bit more pleasing standing, and the animation would flow a bit better. right on. urgaffel- spare my nuts please, i finish!! :drumrock:

01-26-2003, 12:25 PM
Super! I was transfixed by the setup, drama and the timing. Also, the monster animation of lunging and leaping is nice. It harkens back to the days of ralph bakshiesque animation...raw and full of kinetic energy.
You mentioned pose to pose...were the in-betweens much manipulated using splines in editor? Or did you animated them as well?
Only crit I have is the creatures being glass transparent things. From the render it looks rather "low budget"...unless, of course it's there for stand in only.
Hope this takes you to the next level.

I don't know if I can even say anything that hasn't already been said a thousand times over in this thread, but just FANTASTIC work. I love the feel of the render, even though there isn't much rendered material in there, yet. My favorite scene is with the guy running up the stairs. That reel is purely amazing... I love your camera work. The rhyme and the timing couldn't have been better.
One critic... before he is running up the stairs, his footsteps seemed to slip a bit.
Two questions...
1) Did you actually animate each monster those scene? If so, it must have taken you ages.
2) How many months have you spent on this reel?
Like I said... amazing work. :D

01-26-2003, 09:29 PM
First of all that was an awesome reel everything was top notch but the most notable feature was the animation part. i can see why some might think u used script to create those movements, reminds me of aliens :)
and for the music i thought it went quite well with the flow of the story and the theme :buttrock: though the ending was a bit freaky for me i thought flow of it were superb my only gripe is the reel seemed dark alittle that might be due to the fact that maybe u havent put lights in yet or maybe it was intentional but i couldnt see what was going on, unless it was in wireframe. second i thought the presentation at the beginning could be better instead of couple of word in black background showing up :) but that might just be me :) overall great job

This is great work! Awesome!!!
Even in this unfinished version it is one of the best cg shorts I've ever seen - and I've seen a lot ;)
So keep it up. I think a dark sketch-like style would be perfect for this clip. I searched the internet in order to find a render engine doing what i have in mind.
I have no idea what Softimage offers concerning comic rendering, anyway, this is how IMHO it would be just perfect (concerning the stokes and shading):
Picture1 (http://www.finalrender.com/products/link.asp?TID=:by%20A.%20Cantarel&LID=../products/images/finaltoon/gallery/brain-detector_hatching.jpg) or even betterPicture2 (http://www.finalrender.com/products/link.asp?TID=:by%20A.%20Cantarel&LID=../products/images/finaltoon/gallery/needle-dream_hatching.jpg)
Maybe you have something completely different in mind, I just hope you'll not destroy parts of the already perfect atmosphere in your short with a not fitting rendering. Would be too bad! :hmm:

wow, i had almost forgotten about this project....you had posted some wip animation tests a while ago and i was impressed....this is just amazing!!!!!
i dont know what to say, everything is perfect (with the exeption of the missing next level of detail in the animation....which you are working on ;) )
LOVE the story idea........LOVE the musical choice......timing is dead on! Only suggestion i could have that may make it a little bit less confusing is maybe have the main character at the end of the struggle in the alley grab on of the monsters by the throat....pan up to his face struggling then pull back showing him holding the girls throat...........all in one camera move.......maybe even have the lighting fade into the subway cars lighting as it pushes on his face :) i dont think you would really have to change much in the timing to do it and it would make the ending you are getting at a lot more impactful!
all in all AMAZING WORK......cant wait to see it finished!

What more can I say amazing work. It looks like you may have built your self quite a fan club and you better keep up the hard work. Excelnt work on the monsters and the guy but you might want to work on the scenes with the girl she definatlly needs some more work. Like steverage said I think you need to have a sharper cut from the scene after he is sournded by the monsters and perhaps have a flash of white, I think that the white would work very well especially if you are keeping this very dark look (which I like). Also if the next camer angle was a down shot on the guy it might work a little better.
 Great stuff dude
Hat's off to this unlikely hero, finest composition of a short I've seen in a very long time. The dark imagery is pronouced even in wireframe... you should really enter the final short in the next XSI student contest. IMHO this is already superior to the 2002 winners. I like this...creatures are great...story is interesting and the ending is a surprise. A few comments though, the scene when the creature drops down in hte alley would probably cut better if he totally wipped screen with his mouth. Your missing out on a cool transition from his insanity to his reality only by a few frames.
Also the ending with the creature droping down in the subway could be handled better I believe. Just my opinion but maybe he should drop into frame a little slower and more menacing then the quick jump down into bite. Right now it's so quick and jerky that it's more of a distraction to the mood then a trully horific moment. I'm thinking the lurking down towards him as he backs up would be enough, just leave the bite out all together when you cut to black. Just a thought.
Love the music. Can't wait to see this finished.

Absolutely impressive.
The best thing of this short though is not only the good graphics and atmosphere... as everyone else is pointing out. It is also supported by a solid story that leaves the observer open to think of it at different levels.
I mean to me it looked like the guy is some sort of psycho, but he still doesn't know that. And those monsters are his killer-side, violently taking over his good-side and making him kill the girl (that explains why those monsters would turn to her even if he was ready at bite-distance). Then in the end he realizes for a moment, before his killer side completely takes over (figuratively killing the good-side).
I know it may be just my twisted mind..... it still is a fantastic piece of work. Can't wait to see it completed.

Hrmm what? Oh yah what I said earlier about the render style.
I don't know if was interpreted as I thought it would be better all wireframe or not. The answer to that question is no. The blend of the two just make a wicked combination. One I have yet to come across on the net. I can definitely see it becoming a new trend, I know it has totally stimulated me to imagine so pretty crazy things I could do with it. Just gives everything that whole surreal feeling.
Man Im tired :)

good job by the way Brian Brilliant ending love it

Love the piece so far, but I have to agree with previous posts on the beasts...
IMHO
I don't think the transparency doesn't do them much justice... and I would imagine boost your render time(especially with a horde of them in the scene).
If you do go transparent... check out Arkaam's transparent demon work, his 'shader' might look cool on those guys...
Of course, it's your baby, and the animation looks pretty shit-hot so far...
How many hours have you go into this already?
Great idea.

:buttrock: you guys rock!!! i never thought of the wireframe captures as a final, but i'm loving that. [msf]- a mixture of the transparency and the wire would be killer, i've some testing with that :) as it stands now the renders will be in GI with passes of detail added in. i'll try to get some further tests up on this post. Dreamwave- all scenes are self contained in sepoerate scene files. steverage- you're right, that area need to be broken up a bit, a white flash might just be the trick, i like how Fincher blended some of his cuts together in fight club. i'd like to try that- the shot would virtually have both man and creature on the same frame with differing transparencies. simple and sweet. chepe297- 5 months spent in total from concept to it's current state, one month to go:eek: Terminator- i'll be doing the start over, it's fpo for presentations here at school. XerC- those comic renders are wicked! xsi has a nice toon shader. Gentle Fury- that is an awesome idea, and i think it would be much better;) ed209- also a very nice idea, can't wait to try these suggestions!! Octopuzzy- one of my fav videos, that mood would be nice to capture  AJE- lost count of hours logged on this. :insane: again, thanks for the comments, suggestions!

I think the music is awesome also! :airguitar
Really feelin your sense of animation. Although this was not the final piece, I feel that u can definately take that wireframe idea to another level.
Case in point:
As i was watching the suspence got to me, not just the cinematic suspense, but the anticipation of seeing the scene textured. When our character first sees the monsters, I wanted to see them in their full textured ferocity!
All in all, excellent. I would like to see what the monsters looked like with a more reptillian skin
keep it up!

wow wow wow.... thats is sooo sweet! I've just sat here for 2 hours downloading it on my crappy 56k modem, and it was so worth the wait. I'm going to university in september, and thats got me right in the mood! My kind of short. Dark, weird and a twist at the end.
I don't like the idea of the glass like monsters... are you planning to use a compositing program to give it extra depth? could look good if you blow the blacks out and give it a half saturated green/blue look. ie fightclub.
Keep it up... post some of the test renders if you have time also.

An incredible animation to say the LEAST. I've always loved System of a Down's first album. The only part I'd say that needs work is when it hits about 1:34, the cut in the music goes too fast where the song goes "Before..... you know, I will be waiting..."
You have incredible sense of timing and hard to stomache that each monster is individually keyframed? Awesome... keep it going.

I'm not familiar with the band but I think it wasn't bad at all, but only cuz it sounds like in the vein of Tool. Advice: Use Tool =)
But your editing is great, animation and everything else awesome too. Chick should be a tad bit more suprised when entering the subway train... I thought she came in to kick ass not get ass kicked. She looks like she's being assaulted by bums on the BART, not menacing aliens.

Won't be saying anything new here when I say that it looks really good, really really good.
The monsters move very fluent and dynamicly. Some of the walk cycles of the guy could be looked at same goes for the facials, but it was a first pass, right?.
Don't like the music though. Is there going to be a sound and soundfx track with music behind that or will it be more like a music video?
Now go and finish that sucker
cheers

Incredible work man... all I can say is: 'OMG'
The walking animation outside the train at the start is a little akward (sp?) though.
I like the audio btw, and I also like the wireframe stuff (yeah you'll prolbably change it... but is has style and shows how good your animation is).
*edit: one last thing. In the end, when he realizes what he's done, he makes some movements with his hands. I think in reality, people would (not 100% conscious[sp?]), grab the nearest edge they could reach, as a sort of erm (hard to express this in a foreign language ;))... something they can count on, what they consider to be real. So maybe it would be an idea to have him try to grab the dooropening with is right hand (missing once, getting hold the second time) while he looks at his left one.
Just an idea though.

The creatures are well cool, obviously spent a lot of time on them.
SUGGESTION- Perhaps spend a bit more time on the guy. Human animaton is sooooooooooo hard to do well. A bit more subtlety on the close ups.

Hey man, I really liked the quaility of your animation, the amount of work involved in something like that seems stagering to me, again, im quite impressed.
Um, i cant really crit the animation much, (right now it just looks RAD), but theres a few things i would (if it was me animating) change. This is just personal preferance by the way :) !! near the end when he was strangeling the girl, i would try and position the male characater more in front of her, with his wieght more evenly distributed, maybe have his legs slightly spread so his center of gravity is in the middle of his body. Try and get thier shoulders squared up to eachothers, that way it would seem more plausible for him to strangle her in that short of time because he would be able to put more power into it the way hes positioned. then maybe get the guys palm maybe more towards the middle of her neck, so his fingers go all the way around. yay!
Oh, and it might be difficult to change the timeing on the very end, seeing as its tuned to teh soundtrack, but the way you have the monster just kinda sticking its head out left me wanting to see something more dramatic, so maybe have it kinda emerge more so we can see it, and have it spread its jawas and arms wide as well! or soemthign, i dunno. All i know is YOU rock! were not talking sall pebbles here, but like, large boulders! rock ones!
