hey, emailsux
yur car is wicked, very snappy, but I guess you have a lot of in-betweens and face shapes to do eh?? and the 30 second-commercial style is really working. I however, feel that the Woody Allen character should be more snappy and nervous, but other than that, I cannot wait to see it when it's done

Looks great so far.
The only critique I can think of is this:
In the first shot where the car appears, the anticipation before speeding off looks almost like the car is moving up against the building backwards. Maybe that action could happen a little farther away from the building? I think that could give a more realistic perspective to the shot.
I love the last scene with the car. The music there is perfect!

Class 37 eh? You're the next ones to graduate, I remember those days... It looks like your movie is coming along nicely. But don't end the short as a beer commercial, it's so cliche. That and "it was only a dream" endings are so comin with VFS reels. Just a suggestion

Great work Nigel C of Class 37
Since you are looking for, dare I say, constructive criticism, I have a few things to say about your animation so far.
Since you obviously arent done the bar scenes, I can only comment on the car/street scenes:
1. In the first car scene where tarintino is driving, what if you made his driving even more aggressive? I dont get the feeling that he's driving reckless enough.
Walking Woody is great.
2. In the second car scene where Woody is driving, why not add more traffic to the streets. Traffic that seems to be moving faster than Woody just to emphasize how slow Woody is actually driving.
The dashboard camera shot of Woody is great.
3. What about making the last car scene, when they're flying through the air longer?
unless there is a time limit on this piece, I would suggest extending a few of the car scenes.
Great work so far! I cant wait to see the finished result!

Thanx swadepgh, Pants01, scottman, and davids. More is on the way I am almost done ruffing out the lipsynce so when I have finished that I will put the new version up for you guys to see. Thank you for the crits it is all good and I will be doing most of it now and perhaps after the end of term. For the first car shot I was thinking of just moving the camera cause I think its just a forshorting thing going on, and I love the idea for more traffic I will definatlly have to bang out some more car models and add them in. Thanks again guys.

again, excellent work nigel. the flow of your piece from cut to cut is perfect, only one scene bothers me. when woody begins to explain his thoughts, the shot contains him in the car at a complete stop and then the car begins to move forward making a right turn. try having the car constantly moving throughout that scene, i think it may help. the car animation and woody's walk are amazing. nice details. i really like the second avi you attached with the test of the line/toon shader. adding more cars would be wicked, an awesome suggestion scottman. try picking up the ambient noise in the bar as well, i think it would add to your piece. show us MORE!!!
:annoyed:
We all know you took a nap, and then woke up and found your grandma had done that for you, so quit taking the credit or i'll call carolyn! but seriously guys, i dont think your tarentino sounds like enough of a dink!

Hey everyone this is an updated vesion:
http://www.vfs.com/~nigelc/
Its very ruffed in lip synce and the scenes in toon shader are the final render just have to finish the comps for them and then finish the rest of the animation. I have just started inbetweening so I hope to be finished the inbetweening and lip synce in a few weeks. Unliklyhero thanx for the sugestion for the car moving all the time i figured i would put a blinking signal light (still not to sure how im going to do it in the shader style, I tryed but not to successfully) I kind of like the fast start but then the fact that he is driving really slow. Thanx Rex.

Pretty nice i really like the slow motion jump.
I want to know how much times did you spend on that short? and what software did you use,I know that at VFS use XSI 3.0 but did you use some other softwares...? :buttrock:
I am studing in 3d too but in ottawa on maya and i am starting to think about XSI because i heard the animation tools a great what do you think about XSI?
again good work bud:applause:

hey man, thats awsome!
a couple of us are arguing over whether the the car scenes are pencil tests or whether its toon shaded. could you clear this up?
Just a suggestion but when woody allen says " wait hold on " have the car stop in mid air waiting for his response.
"Schmits Meir Beer" LOL . . . priceless!

Thanks rexfang, BlackMedusa, and hollywood I am getting close to finishing the short so I will hope to have it up in the finished section at the end of the month.
BlackMedusa, From storyboarding, to 3d animatic, to now I have spent 5 months on this project (getting alittle sick of it but I am finding new ways to enjoy it) at VFS we use XSI and I like it alot it is very powerful at animating. We also use maya, I am doing my reel with XSI because I am a little more comftrable with it, but I would recomend using maya most companys seam to be using it so it will be very valuble to know it insde and out. Im also using combustion and after affects to do the composting.
hollywood, It is a line shader but I have hand animated some things in photoshop like the smoke, Thanks for the suggestion about woody I think i will do that.

I had almost no idea what your project was about until mid term 6 presentations and I was blown away. It's short and solid, and entertaining to watch. The animation is fluid, the voices work well and the models read really well, but I suppose that's all old news. I can't wait to see the final renders!
If the scene isn't rendered yet, when woody says to stop, you could have the car stop in mid air and have tarentino get thrown forward and hit his head on the windshield.

Cool commercial, you nailed Woody Allen. I am not very familiar with Tarantino but it does not make me think of him by his movements. I felt like there was a continuity error from hitchcok walking into his symbol since the wall makes him look like he is no longer behind the bar when the next scene he is. Maybe a depth pass will make the band posters further away.Steady on, I'm sure you've done alot of work since the post:applause:
I am so proud
