View Full Version : Reference book on Maya?
Cozmo 08-13-2006, 05:59 PM Hi everyone, I'm looking for a good book on Maya, that covers pretty much all the aspects of the package, not in great detail of course, that would be impossible. I found a Maya 4.5 bible but it seems out-dated, so basically I'm looking for something that's no older than version 6 and no less than 1000 pages :). What do you suggest? btw I'm not a complete begginer
Thanks

get the video tuts from 3dbuzz.com. they are cheap (for the amount of content) and you will learn a lot about the program.
books : it depends on what you are looking for
I like the Maya killertips books .. good for ideas, but no learning the program step by step.
My maya came with learning maya modeling from Alias. not bad but I like video tuts better.

The Maya Fundamentals books are pretty decent, especially if you're somewhat new to the software. The manual isn't too bad either (although it's not the best software manual I've used, personally).

Well, I've got some gnomon dvds on maya, but it turns out that I'm not familiar with some basic stuff, most of which is about the interface, some basic tools.

The Visual Quickstart Guide is pretty good for a reference. The latest (for 7) is nowhere near 1000 pages but it's handy for a lot of fast info and examples if you need to look something up. Also the Maya 6 Killer Tips book is a nice complement to the Quickstart guide. I think the two of them can be purchased together for the less than the price of the heavier project based books.
The Gnomon DVDs are great but crappy references. It's painful to have to look up something on a DVD and the written indexes on the boxes aren't always that great. Also on the older DVDs I wonder about some of the their workarounds being out of date due to newer versions of Maya.

Depending on how new you are to Maya, the Maya Killer Tips and Tricks books are awesome and cover various time saving tweaks for a production work flow. If you are relatively new then I would stick to the Maya fundementals books they are pretty good from what I can tell.
Gnomon is also an excellent resource for most things maya.
