Short film: "Long Road Home" by Jason van Niekerk (aka Freaky_Jason_) :)

Hey guys, i got this concept from my friend that it currently studing script writting (1yr) which he used for a simple assignment and i thought it would be quite interesting if i can turn this into a cartoony-style animation for my final project for my year ending. So, I dicided to get started and start doing the planning and pre-production of the short film. I thought too share all this info and the progress on developing this short with you guys so that everyone can learn more inqluding myself and experrience the journey.

( Here is the story set out for you guys, BUT plz feel free to crit, share ideas ect. this is for myself so please feel free to just
do anything ) - Im working on the storyboard almost done !

Narrative Structure :

Logling - It's a CG Animation about a traveller (Student) who tries to make his way from is Studing location back to his home in Johannesburg ( The Capital of South Africa ) . Unfortunately, everything that can go wrong will go wrong.

First and second explosion ( Climax ) - 1st : The protagonist's car breaks down.
2nd : The plane that the protagonist crashes.

Prose Story :

A traveller (Student) drives his car form his destination (Studing away form home) back home for holdidays. On his journey back home a series of unfortunate events happens to him. He drives up behind a truck that is transporting hardware equipment ( Nails, Tools,
Ect. ). The traveller gets frustrated while sitting stuck behind this truck.
The truck his a pothole and this causes some of the hardware equiptment to fall of onto the road including a box of nails. The traveller drives over the nails which causes his tyres to burst. After getting to a complete stop he gets out of his car frustrated thinking of a solution to get home.
After quite some time that pased and holding a piece of paper which says --> Johannesburg (home destination) with alot of cars passing him by on the highway a truck comes by with a speed and swfff his paper away. He gives up and sits on is lagues next to his car waiting.
Lying on in the dust on is last bored position he seas a face blocking the son, its a biker who stopped asking him for a ride.
After quite a while of driving on the back of a harley the biker decides to stop by a local GAS & PUB building with local bikers. Ones again the traveller standing observing and realizing that he is stuck ones again (Kicking the dust of anger) he seas a roadsign
next to the highway ( Airport ) and he thought ... " Aaahh what the heck."
He gets on a airplane sitting back comfortible and sighs but an anouying kid next to him starts asking questions ( "how come,....How come..." )
Traveller goes totally insaine, grab the kid by his neck and swfff him through the plane window, causing a lack of pressor and the plane starts going down.
With a trawler in the distance and a relaxed ocean this plane goes straight into the water. [Cut] Later that day a trawler whines up is fish net
finishing another days work you see the travelers arm between all the fishes getting throughen in the storages base.
At the final shot of this film we have a shot inside the fish factory focusing on the final production fase of the packaging of the fish
getting ready to be shipped...we see a BOX gets stamped - " SHIP TO Johannesburg " ... So the traveller arrive home but just not as he expected to.

I'd love to see this one when it's finished. Story sounds okay and has a funny ending.

I'm staying tuned to see the development. :)

looking so interesting so so funny too, if you meant deadline on 29 sep. 2006 then lesten:
are you serious? did you do anything to this project or it is still at its begining because due to the story you should have at least 10 guys working with you in modeling field and same in the other fields to get this work finished on time besides you need super computers to finish rendering, i'm sorry to tell you this but if you haven't sarted yet i see your washout from your first post.

otherwise 20006 means you have toooooooo much time left i wish i can live to that year to see you project finished hehehe. :scream:

Read your sig through a couple of times, and try to take a step back. You will not be able to complete anything of any quality if you stick to this production schedule, sorry to sound so negative but that's the bottom line.

I suggest storyboarding out a section that has a bit of a punch line/conclusion to it, aim for 1 minute of finished work and even then you're going to be pushing it by end of sept.

Quality not quantity! Good luck dude

Nice modeling. :) I agree with the tight time schedule, maybe shorten the story a bit, take out irrelevant parts, stick to the basic story. (Finding Nemo can be made in 1 minute, you just have to unwrap all the 'adventure' parts and sidegags.)

Thx Harregarre and mattmos! i agree ... thats why I posted the story so ppl can give some options around it ... plz feel free to give some ideas or anything.

As I keep on modelling, I'll think off ideas on how to twist it a little bit, but thx for the reply man !!! Appreciate it ALL !!!

Thx for the honesty ...

Cheers Freaky_J
PS : I was thinking, should I model everything finish and to the texure and shading first AND then start with the rigging and setting up ? - just a thought I had !

Hmm, the second question is quite interesting. I'm not a rigger but I think you might want to rig first to check how it all fits together and see where the chokepoints are.

Gotta go to work now, I'll think about it later although you might want to ask a rigger.

Hi I used to rig most of the times i think you can do it both ways but (I'm talking about 3d Max) you have to arrange your stack though because you must fix textures while animation takes place (this is special for organic things) textures will swim if rigging comes first in the stack so you have to be carefull this methode is also important for morphing and other modifiers, if you are using mesh selections methodes and clothes and hairs the stack will go more complicated and you should arrange it correctly otherwise you will experience problems.

your modeling is so great keep up the good work.

Okay, about what I said in my previous post. I don't know shit about rigging but what I meant was that when you're rigging with a fully textured model and suddenly something doesn't work/rig out the way you want it to, you'd have to retexture the whole thing if you make changes in the model.

I see, why I asked - Im planning to do 3d Animatics and just thought I should get that done ask quick as possible ... but i think either way i have to do it so just gona finish all my models and start texturing my enviroment, car, truck, ect.

But nway guys A BIG THANKS TO YEAH ALL !!! - just have to figure out a twist in the story so I can shorten it --- was thinking cutting out the whole biker scene and "gas & pub station" - allthough I already modeled it ... :D then can just make him realice theres an airport close by after the whole time he was waiting for a lift - and then just take the story from there ( still thinking of some more changes )

Thx 4 replies - CHEERS guys

Hi ,

It could be , nice and fun ...:)

But i m totally agree with the tight time...

The last year I was exactly in the same situation , i finished my student movie in a few weeks .. At work 16 or 18 hours by day ...
So we did it , but the quality that we wish was not here.
(But our short during 8 min )

(If you want see it http://www.esma-montpellier.com/gallery.php?section=4&page=2#video    It was call "Catching" )

So you can do it ...

So good luck and good work ..

And sorry for my poor english
