View Full Version : Downloadable Texturing PDF Booklet
leigh 08-13-2006, 02:07 AM Hi all,
Those of you who've been here for a while may remember me posting a couple of texturing articles, called "Texturing for Dummies", a few years back. Those articles were very well received by the community, and even ended up in a book publishing deal for me.
Well, years later those articles had become horribly outdated, and in some cases totally incorrect. So I figured it was time for an update! Since I am currently on vacation, I took a day out to almost totally rewrite them, and have combined them all, together with entirely new sections, into an illustrated 15-page PDF file.
This article is mainly aimed at people who know very little about texture painting and UV mapping. Topics covered include basic texturing theory (ie a little about common surface parameters), a basic overview of UV mapping, and some food for thought regarding the art of texture painting. Some information, especially in the texturing theory section, has been somewhat simplified for the sake of easy explanation.
Texturing for Dummies (PDF file, 7.5mb) (http://www.leighvanderbyl.com/pdf/texturing.pdf)
Sample pages:
http://www.leighvanderbyl.com/images/dummypages.jpg
I also have a few other articles that may interest newcomers to texturing:
An article discussing how to determine the size for your texture maps (PDF file, 81kb) (http://www.leighvanderbyl.com/pdf/size_does_count.pdf)
A 17 page, illustrated set of Photoshop tips and tricks for texture painting (PDF file, 540kb) (http://www.leighvanderbyl.com/pdf/PhotoshopTips.pdf)
Please feel free to print these articles out and distribute them to your friends, students, whoever. All I ask is that you don't reproduce any part of them without contacting me first.

Hello there Leigh. I was very impressed with the way you explained things in all your PDF's. I was so impressed that I was recommending people from other forums who may have asked questions that you answered in your documents to read them, however... I was mistaken in telling them that the guy who wrote these documents had a good grasp of his art.
Then LetterRip from blender's forums informed me that Leigh was not a guy but a lady with a very good knowledge of her art. It was a little embarrassing, so I apologise to you. Sorry!
But in any case, thank you very much for these informative PDF's, they are what most noobs to 3D should read when starting. Bravo:applause::applause::applause:

Hi Leigh,
I just wanted to let you know that you really kick @#$@ with your tutorials and articles. I got most of your articles and I most tell you that they are really handy. Your work really inspires me. Keep it up and thanks for sharing with us.
BTW, I am a maya user and now I am teaching myself Houdini. I really want to be a good Visual Effect artist (explosion, water effects, smoke, well, you get the idea. However, I would really like to work from time to time in texturing project, so my question for you is, do you think your book (Lightwave 8 Texturing ) will become handy to me eventhough I mostly work on maya.
Thanks

Thanks, I'm glad you've enjoyed my articles! To answer your question about that book - no, it won't be of very much use so I wouldn't recommend buying it. You'll only find a small part of it useful, and that part is already largely covered by this particular PDF file.
Texturing is something you really can master simply by practising, and understanding how it works :) Trust me when I say that you don't need any books to become a texture painter - I didn't have any books when I was learning, but I managed alright on my own, just with a lot of practise! :) So just keep working hard at it, and I am sure you'll do just fine!

The articles that you wrote have been very handy to me. I guess I just need to practice more to get really good at it. Thanks again for your comments and support.

this is exactly what my figure drawing teacher used to tell me 20 yrs ago, whenever i'd struggle with a drawing he would say "just take some time and look close and the answer is there"...today when i struggle i still hear his voice "just look..." and i look(study) and always find the answer..
I feel this is what Leigh is also trying to tell us, "just look..........."

Hi Leigh,
What great workshops on texturing you have provided for us on this forum. I am new to texturing & find your workshops very useful & helpful.
I remember that in part 6 "Translucency, Transparency & Refraction" of your workshop, you mentioned that you will be writing a book on painting textures in Photoshop. I will really be looking forward to that book when it comes out & will definetely get a copy since I'm completely new to texturing. Please do inform us on this forum when that book is completed. Thanks again for you time & dedication towards sharing your knowledge with us.
Andrew

Interesting article, but there are a few typos e.g. 'week at the knees' - a 'week' is a period of 7 days and not a physical weakness. It's always a good idea to have somebody else proof read articles and run the spell checker before posting.

Thanks a lot, man. I'm totally novice and could use something like this.
I was just thinking that back about ten year ago I tried learning all this stuff and was wasting money on program specific books when all I was need was one book to explain the basic ideas of everything - from there I could've adjusted to each specific program's features utilizing that basic knowledge or general idea.
As I understand, most Photoshop tuts can be worked out in GIMP or Photo POS Pro. I have both and also Dog Waffle (free version)...still not certain as to why Dog Waffle would be any different to Photo POS or GIMP though.
You're link is jammed up so I'll keep trying from time to time.
All praise graphic gurus sharing free books!
