"Horse in Motion"
As promised this week we will start a series of sporadic drawing workshops. The idea is to draw things and events to improve our collective drawing skills.

Ok today you have to do AT LEAST 12 sequential sketches based on the movement of a horse. We will use the work of Eadweard Muybridge as reference.

You may spend as much as much r as little time as you want on each sketch.

Click on the link bellow, select a sequence you like and draw it. You may spen as little or a much time you want on each drawing.

At the end post a strip similar to this one:
>>LINK<< (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:The_Horse_in_Motion.jpg) (not wider than 800 pixels)
or better yet, you may post an animated gif similar to this one:
>>LINK<< (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d7/Muybridge_horse_gallop_animated_2.gif/250px-Muybridge_horse_gallop_animated_2.gif)

These are the rules:

You have NO TIME LIMIT to do your sketch. IF you go beyond the assigned time limit , you have to post WHATEVER you have done after the time has expired, along with the FINAL drawing.
Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
RESOLUTION : The image can have any aspect ratio up to 800 x 600
They can be done on any medium.
If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing, unless is it an integral part of the challenge.
You can post an entry at anytime for the topic presented on this thead BEFORE the voting thread for THE WEEK has been posted.
The artist also has to post total length of time it took and program used.
Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
The topics will be picked at random from the list on the TOPICS thread >>LINK<< (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php/?t=145003)
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them).
Good luck

Do we HAVE to use that reference?

Weeeh - my very first animation...ever :bounce:

It's not great, and there's plenty of errors in there, but given that it really is my first one it could have ended a whole lot worse :D I had to go back and correct the left frontleg after finsihing as it never really moved forward. So I've learned a lot from todays challenge - great fun! Took about 1 1/2 hours in PS + Imageready.

it's tiny but took me forever, I think it took two hours.. and I even had to download a gifmakingprogram cuz I've never learned how to use imageready, didn't even get it right while reading the helpthingy...
two hours, alias+animation gif wizard..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/uglypaperdoll/CGtalk/hestgallopp.gif
and there's a framemistake.. but I'm to lazy tp fix it...

and the animation is waay slow, it actually looked good when it was faster..

Overchord, good work but I believe you forgot a knee joint or two. The two front legs only have two joints hip and knee/ankle. Also, their bodies tend to bend in a bit while running. Of course, I shouldn't really critisize since I can't find the time to try it myself and show how I really can't do any better if I can do it at all.

No idea how long it took, maybe 30-45mins... No refs :P
I did some horse riding when I was younger, and learning the 4 steps of gallop was something required for the exams. I therefore drew those 4 steps, stylized, (just sticks for the legs) that I detailed a little bit, then drew the bodies. To finish off I drew one more frame between each of those 4 steps. So that's technically only 8 frames instead of the 12 required, so I'll probably have to wrap up another one. I wanted to provide my base sketch with just the sticks, but I cropped it off and it got lost when switching to image-ready.

But at least you get an idea.

To make up for the missing frames of the gallop, here's a trotting animation. Still no refs, same technique as the gallop animation. I tried to have the horse a little bit less "lineart-like"

Trotting is moving the feets by pair, front right and back left, front left and back right.
If i changed the shading, I could get ambling for the same price, since it's easy as pie, front left back left, front right back right.

Took me like 35 min, photoshop+image ready+tablet

Well, I did it.
5 mins, Ambling

Robertt: I like the style, and your drawings looks a lot more like a horse than mine :D

ChristinaRH: I had the same problem with image-ready. The help file really doesn't "help" much at all. But the main trick in image ready is to open the animation palette first, and the and your individual layers as frames. My biggest problem was that it refused to save the optimised animation as a gif file until I found out that the optimisation options is hidden somewhere else

UrbanKunoichi: Thank you for the crit - it is always welcome :) And you're absolutely right, the anatomy of the horse is awfull. I think i got carried away with making the frames after the first rough sketch, where I actually should have taken a step backwards and made a better initial sketch. But this time this was mostly about the process of creating the animation for me.

May-lea: Awesome animations  I like how you have given the head some really good motion as well combined with a tight set of frames that work really well.
I really like your first stylized one - Its a good reference for a bit of horse anatomy.

Photoshop+ImageReady. Around 30-40 minutes.
I really don't like the jump between the last and the first frame, was thinking of fixing that, but I spendt hours trying to host it :/. Might fix it eventually.

Christina- See the number under your frames in ImageReady, try putting it to 0 seconds. Your animation should run smoother then ;)
Edit: oh... just noticed you didn't use ImageReady..

Thank you :). I know a few good tricks to draw horses, if there are other horse related workshops, I might share :)
