just to be clear, they are talking about a disk drive for your pc, not a stand alone Blu-Ray player for your family room.

either way, it's another "what the f!ck is Sony doing" moment...

C'mon... Let's be fair. They did know what they were doing with Betamax, MiniDisc, & UMD. Oh, wait.... ;)

Just based on personal experience, but I've always felt that Sony product & tech have been hit or miss. My first Sony Walkman was aces. Same with my Sony set top DVD & my PSP. My first PS1 was a stinkin' pile though. The drive died after two months. My 2nd PS1 lasted for about 8 months and then refused to play unless it was put sideways or upside down. 3rd time was a charm though. That one still works to this day. My first Sony Discman.... It played only 50% of my discs (even the new ones) and died in less than 6 months. My 1st Sony PC-DVD collected dust and that's about it. Worked great for a little while and then decided that it just wasn't going to read my discs no matter how many times I begged. :)

Sony pretty much has a 50/50 record with me. I don't know if it's their quality assurance - or seeming lack thereof - or the constant fine tuning of their manufacturing process. I just learned long ago not to be an early adopter with Sony products, especially when there's a new format on the table.

Maybe you should try some different brands once in awhile. My PSP has been fine but I have had other Sony products that just fell apart or quit working so I quit buying Sony consumer products unless they are the only one that makes it like the PSP.

Last Christmas I bought a PSP. They had a deal where you could purchase a PSP + 1 gig card for $299. Shortly after buying it, the home button turned REAL sensitive. Several times during a game, if I made an extreme movement, the "Are you sure you want to quit?" screen would come up. (BTW, this doesn't actually pause the game... died a lot because of that.) I went to go exchange it, but Best Buy went silly on me. They didn't have the 1 gig PSPs to exchange and they refused to just pull one out of another box. So I had to return it.

It's a pity, really. I was starting to like that thing.

That must be quite an annoying experience :D

All the Sony products i've brought or had worked fine.

PSOne fine for its life until the slim one came I traded it in.
For PS2 it worked fine for many years and I even got a network adapter for it. When the slim PS2 came out my ps2 acted a little funny but still worked fine, I traded it in with the NA and got my slim ps2 for free.
Sony camera = awesomeness
Sony tv (triton or somethin glike that it's downstairs) works awesome, picture is good. It a small tv in the kitchen but we end up watching tv on it instead of or larger screen screen a few feet from it.

So I have no gripes concerning Sony products really. I even brought the lcd screen which is clear and very good looking. Wii and PS3 here I come.

I've never had a big problem with sony, my PSP works great, my PS1 never had a problem, got it once the price dropped, and it still works, same went for my PS2, but it got stolen in a break and enter, so my next PS2 worked just as well. The only sony thing I've had a problem with was my laptop, 3 years after I brought it, it spat the dummy and doesnt power on any more, its had a few small repairs, nothing too serious though, but for the amount of work it had, I'm rather supprised how long it lasted. So hats off to sony IMHO, and blu ray imho is good for storing all manner of stuff, HD movies are becoming huge in size, no matter how much compression you put on them, I often find myself writing off several DVD's full of files once I'm done editing a bit of work, so I have space to work on, so the more physical space in the Bluray drives over HD is enough of a selling factor for me.

So at the moment its the V1 blues. You can fork out money and get it now, it will be expensive, slow and buggy, but you can be the first to say you own it, or you can wait and get it cheaper, with the bugs ironed out, it will be faster, and cheaper, but you wont have the latest and greatest, happens with any product, not just sony.

i thought the point of this thread was the fact that the first blue ray drives wouldn't play blue ray movies, not that people's ps1's and 2's lasted a long time... ??

Once you buy a new motherboard, graphics card and monitor that have HDCP chips, you should be able to view the movies right?

My mom has a Sony Trinitron TV that must be somewhere around twenty years old now :applause: and it's still going strong and looking fabulous - but I agree, Sony can be really hit or miss.

Sony is hit or miss sometimes. I usually wait till they get the later revisions out then but there stuff. My ps1 still works it was the one in the red box. Then again I still have the box and am very carfeull with my things. I just got the ps2 slim edition and have had no issues but since this is like the most recent edition they should have gotten all the kinks worked out by now. then again I hardly play it all and have only played square games on it. I think out I grew out of playing games. I have a whole bunch of pc games which I haven't touched. Games just aren't as fun anymore, they are so involved. I'm old school, I'd rather play a snes game anyday. Might end up getting a Wii just for that reason. Not a Nintendo fanboy, I'm actually hardcore Sony.
