Wings3D freaking rocks!

i've just been using for about an hour and all i can say is that it is intuitive, fast and a total pleasure to use!

expect some postings soon. :applause:

Sweet, glad you like it! its good to get new wings users.

Hey Policarpo!
I have been admiring your work for quite a while (we met very briefly at the LW world tour in Dallas).

And Oh yeah. Just wait until Clacos updates his plugs for the latest Wings release. Wings is more like WingsLE without his DrawLoop and Slide plugins... You will add another wow or two to your reaction

Man i am checking his website like every 10 minutes to see if he updated the plugins :)

i'll be in heaven when he does.

Yeah. Unfortunately it may be a while. He recently said it would be about 3 weeks before the first one is updated :hmm: I hope the other will not be too far behind. They will be well worth the wait though!

where is his site?

for that matter where can we get all the wings plugins? is there a repository somewhere? dones't appear to be anyhting on the wings3d site itself.

it was also on the website on the left side :)

They are on the Wings3d front page, but real easy to miss. Look at the littly type in the news "panel" thing :)

KayosIII's (http://www.midcoast.com.au/~rgcoy/hobbies/wings.html)
and
Clacos' (http://members.lycos.co.uk/clacos/)

:lightbulb Hopefully with Wing's growing popularity there will be more cool plugs popping up.

Hey Fuzatron...haven't seen you around for awhile....good to see ya!

So SheepFactory...do these really cool "workflow" modeling plug-ins not currently work with the latest build of Wings? Cause I can see why you are so excited about them...they are perfect tools!

Man...Wings3D is an amazing little modeler...i never thought it would be possible to model in a single viewport...but now I know!

Keep up the great work Bjorn!

:bounce: just tried wings and i love it. It feels like mirai a little bit. Is it the same program or something?

BazC

Iratethemad. Well it started off to be a Nendo clone I believe, because Nendo was unavailable (it is now by the way) It's developed from there and I think the aim is to develop into something like Mirai. Bones, morphs, multiple modelling windows and animation are all planned for future releases though most of them will be after Wings 1.0 and that version is still some way off.

Heheh, another LW guy converted.

*High-Fives Cerreto* We did it!

Now let's see if we can get him to convert to Maya and XSI....

i'm converted from maya.

wings sells itself... its free... 2meg download and its good.

& I came from MAX! :D LOL! (I didn't think it's possible that would be a 3d-modeler more powerfull than 3ds max poly-modeling!)
Cheers to Bjorng

MAX really isn't that powerful as it could be. Many people rely on MAX, but discreet seems to disappoint them, including me. Seems that wings grows rapidly, hope this tendence wont let down and the developers keep on implementing new stuff and refine them.
I like wings very much! Easy and Fast, made for modellin'!

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a little while ago i tried to convert a
bunch of fellow WAVERS but they laughed at me...:)

i'm glad to see folks opening up to Wings.

Yeah man wings is great. I heard about it a while back and thought it was a kind of joke app. I guess I really checked it out since the rescent AM debacle. Anyway I would also like to say that I find it much more intuitive than working in LW if that is even possible. Aside from some weirdness getting acquainted with the app, I almost feel right at home. I wish though for a coupe things, 1. a menu with all the options onscreen at all times, and 2. assignable hotkeys for all functions. Other than that the app is fantastic.

BazC

Qslugs, all commands are assignable as hotkeys! just hold your cursor over the command you want to assign a hotkey to. Press / and then the key or keys you want to use. Done!

OOps, my mistake. I see it now. For soe reason I couldnt get the keys to work with functions other than thoes with the magnet icon before. Well it works now. Cool!

I have used wings. What makes it so special? It has a smoothing opp, but know smooth proxy or any sort of derived surface to make high poly stuff. What makes wings's modeller so great?

wasamonkey
02-06-2003, 03:16 PM
that makes it so special
thats a good question
I think its the fact that its accually fun to model in and pretty much anyone can just jump right in and model something without reading a thick book

at least thats why I stayed with it thru the rough times
now it is one of the most powerful modelers I know
scratch that
it is the most powerful modeler I have ever used

even without sub-d to look at how a model is shaping up as you work
and accually forces you to learn and predict the shapes

I used to use another program for sub-d
it had realtime update
the meshes looked like crap and the models had fairly nice shapes
but as soon as I started adding in the finer details I found that alot had to be reshaped because the pull was different

yes I would like interactive sub-d veiw
but I now feel its better suited for the detail stage then the density is not going to change much

edge tools!

that's what makes it rock.
being able to define your geometry anywhere.
modeling with the freedom of NGONS...
the speed....
the available tool set.

it took me ahile "to get" wings...
but once i understood it, i left MAX and LW
as alternate modelers and currently
use nothing but wings, even for mass high poly
projects.

What makes wings's modeller so great?
since almost every option/tool/feature that it already has is the best compare to other apps, You should better asked 'What makes it not great?' ;)
I think 'local axis manipulating' option is not good enough, yet.

<< I think 'local axis manipulating' option is not good enough, yet. >>

Why?

ilasolomon
02-07-2003, 12:49 AM
coz the axis is selected based on face's normal vector, not independent - like max or maya - & maybe I have not a face with correct normal direction available!

Are you dissappointed with max 5? If so, why? In what areas, in your opinion, is max 5 lacking? Thanks

P.S. Yeah, Wings is great! :)

<< selected based on face's normal vector, not independent >>

But the vector axis can be defined by using any selection mode – even though the operation being carried out is a face-based one.

Whilst the exact axis direction is of course dependant on existing geometry*for its definition, the local origin (through which it passes) can also be transferred to a user- defined position – which gives further options.

If satisfactory geometry doesn’t currently exist to define the required vector, then something can be specifically created and that vector saved as a default axis for future use – or, indeed assigned to one of the 2 default commands accessed via Cntrl + LMB/MMB.

*Unless using Rotate | Free when the axis is perpendicular to the screen plane – and no geometry is required for explicit direction definition – even though geom is still required for origin purposes – although there are ways around the limitations imposed by the latter.

If a Rotate | Free vector is transferred through a specified point and this saved as a default command, subsequent use will still rotate the selected geometry around the specified local origin – even though the scree-plane derived axis will change as the view of the model is tumbled.

Unfortunately I don’t have access to Max/Maya so I don’t know how these 2 apps go about this sort of thing :)
