Hi,

When looking for a place to view work from others and learn stuff I stumbled upon this amazing site/forum. I'm sure I can learn a lot from most of you guys.

Anyway, I'm new to the whole 3d-animation thing. (And essentially to animation at all, although I made some flash movies but I never really had the time/patience to work on a single piece.) I recently got my high school diploma and because of the holidays right now I had the time to pick up some of the things I couldn't work on because of exams and stuff.

Well, I was kinda scared by the whole 3d-animating thing because of the whole interface, all those bells and whistles scared the crap out of me. ;) I really wanted to try though, so I started playing around with all the buttons in Maya and after a while I kinda got used to it. (The basic functions, that is.)

My first "animation" (mostly lipsync try) done with Maya:

Greetings from Holland,

Harregarre

P.s. I wasn't able to render the soundfile in Maya so I had to add it afterwards with VirtualDub and for some reason the sound is a bit off. Is it possible to render the .avi including the sound/music?

Hmm, no replies yet. Anyway, I gave another moviequote a try so, erm, without further ado, my second sync:

This time I tried to animate the rest of the body as well. Didn't really act anything out, so that might be something to do next time.

Edit: Just finished my third try. It's a quote from the movie Mars Attacks. The president (Nicholson) speaking.

Greetz,

Harregarre

P.s. Any of you guys had this when you started: I was watching some animations made by some of you and I was getting super-excited. I started working on my own animation and at first I was like 'nah, this is crap'. Then I continued working on it and I was kinda satisfied with how it was coming along. So, I rendered it and watched it a couple of times. A little less satisfied. Then I watched some of your animations again and watched mine and it looks worse than ever. Well, I'm going to try another one, maybe it's going to be better...

it might be just me but i can't get any of your videos to play. In regards to sound in maya, i wouldn't render out an avi in maya if i was you, the file size is huge, its easier to render out a targa sequence and then put the images together using after effects or premiere. Like i said i havn't seen your animations yet, but if i was you, since your a beginner, i wouldn't start out with lip syncs, start out with things like a bouncing ball, and character movement and work your way to lip syncs.

The videos are coded with divx which reduces the filesize dramatically. You can get the codec at www.divx.com (http://www.divx.com). (I suggest you get it because it is used in a lot of videos.)

You're right about the ball/jump exercises but I just wanted to do something funny to start with.

Edit: I think I'm giving the 10secondclub.net contest a shot. It can only help improving my skills, I guess. ;)

Nice animation but so so simple, i think you should check this article:
http://www.siggraph.org/education/materials/HyperGraph/animation/character_animation/principles/prin_trad_anim.htm

it will give you big help.

Thanks for the link. :)

I'm going to try some of the stuff they do at Animationmentor like kicking a ball and hopping on pillars.

Thanks, for some reason Deviantart doesn't want the links to be direct so I'll change them to the viewpage, just press download on the left of the preview picture to watch them.

Been a while again after my last update as I've been playing around with how Maya renders things and how to get the computer inbetweening to stop. Anyway, I'm blocking out some kind of jump with the Lieutenant Dan ball-character.

P.s Haven't animated the tail, I'm going to do that when I have the timing/feel on the ball right. Oh, and the feet are still twinned which is going to change as well but first I need to get the timing right.

Edit: Forgot the link: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/38485183/ click Download on the left to watch it.
