I know somebody who worked there, and he told me how they made the nebula backgrounds. I'm not sure if he told the truth, but it sounded like fun. They got a huge aquarium , put it in a black room and filled it with water. Then they poured yogurth (or milk) in the tank and took pictures while it swirled around and made strange cloudlike shapes.
Like I said, not sure if they actually did it this way, but it sounds plausible. :)

That so cool actually, i was consider that way before you tell me . cause they had same rule , but im just one human not a team or company or superMAN i cant do all things by self~ i just hope i can get enough i need and then make ONLY creative stuff. i got some nebula picture from nasa and noao that also nice
i hate reinvent wheel, we are all human why do not opensource all human work? if all work are copyrightED, people will weaste many time at reinvent wheel that time cant count will very huge , i think one human or company rich that cannot change the world .make all human are rich is greatest. a little communism :)

Here in the site of a succesful artist, you'll find couple tutorials (and more importantly, high resolution arts) about space, nebula and planet creation in Photoshop. The tutorials are under "Biography / Writings".
It seems that Martin has renewed his site and put out older and more detailed tutorials. Nevertheless, it definetely worths a look.
