View Full Version : Render passes using spreadsheet??
tfortier 08-10-2006, 05:19 PM Hi, I was wondering if we can save LW presets or properties, like Unseen by rays and Unseen by camera, in some kind of set.
its pretty bad when we have to composite a lot of different elements from one scene... right now im saving different scenes with increment like "front" "BG" "matte2"... stuff like that but if I have to change a camera move... im have to change it in all the scene... damned!
how do you manage your workflow?
I ear about Surpasses plugin but its no longer for sell...
thanks

I did a search for plugins;
Surpasses is discontinued,
CompAssistant site is dead, (sad... looked very cool)
CompLete site is dead. (sad, it was free... If anybody have it, send it to me! this is an order!;p)
look like there is no more happiness in the lw multi-pass world...

Can't help you with the passes, but this is easy.
Use LS Commander (if you can't find it, dig it up from the "Edit Menu Layout. Do a Search for "commander" and then "Find" it or add it to somewhere on the Menus where you want)
Then start to do your stuff (select object, open properties, tick "unseen by camera", etc) and the commands will pile up in the LS commander list.
When finished, drag&drop the commands to the upper-section (In black). Then Click "Install", give a name and save. A new "Macro" tab will appear in Layout with Your brand new script installed as a new button. Now, you just have to click that button when you want to make this kind of changes.

I just tried... one problem: the command only say "click on unseen camera" and not "Make it unseen by camera"... then if the Unseen camera is already clicked, it will do the opposite and uncheck it!
maybe one solution is to only use that after selecting all the objects and make them visible to cam and rays...
still its very usefull! like actions in photoshop... except the commands are not absolute but relative to what was already checked...

Exactly, those commands work like a switch.
I don't know about a "Select All" command, but you can use the Up/Down Keys to Slect Next Item and also record that command into the script. So when running it would set the parameters and select the next item in the list. You would then click the macro again...
A bit boring if you have 100 items, I know... But you will probably find a solution while working on it!

I composite a fair bit and used to do the same as you, ending up with a dozen scenes or more to try and keep tabs on. One slight change and its a nightmare. I got bored of that, so now I just set up selection sets in the scene editor and turn things on and off on mass. Its a little more time consuming, but it beats having to change the settings of one item in loads of scenes!

i also do multipass rendering. and inevitibly end up with 10-30 scene files. i don't like it, but it's what must be done if using LW.
somethings that ease my pain (especially when dealing with the moved camera problem) are some scripts that I wrote a while back (for LW 8.5):
http://jeremy.lwidof.net/lscript/load_save_camera.jpg Load & Save Camera scripts (http://jeremy.lwidof.net/lscript/#load_save_camera)
http://jeremy.lwidof.net/lscript/reference_camera.jpg Reference Camera scripts (http://jeremy.lwidof.net/lscript/#reference_camera)
http://jeremy.lwidof.net/lscript/reference_motion.jpg Reference Motion scripts (http://jeremy.lwidof.net/lscript/#reference_motion)
They can be very helpful. And if you're on PC, you can render all your passes with my Batch Renderer (http://jeremy.lwidof.net/lscript/#batchrend).
Hope these help.

look like everyone have the same problem... cant believe newtek still ignore it. it should be easy to incorporate different scene layers... just remembering some parameter in a form of layers...
I got a problem here; I use lot of mdd file in my scene but they dont load automaticly with the scene when i load it... and when its ask for mdd files, its even not giving me the name of the mdd file I should choose... a real mess... then I dont see how I should be able to use the batch renderer if my scenes cant load mdd file...
Is there a way to make lightwave reconize it at loading like creating an mdd directory or something like that? its a real pain!

that's odd. which version of LW? are the .mdd's generated by LW or a 3rd party app? are the .mdd files located over a network? here are some things to try (in regards to .mdd's):
1. Move the .mdd's in/out of the content directory and update your scene accordingly. (some elements of the scene record relative paths in the scene unless they're outside the content directory. so try the opposite of what it is now and see if that changes anything.)
2. If the .mdd's are on a network drive, try using UNC pathing instead of drive mapping (or vice versa).
3. Try using a different .mdd reader. MD_Plug reads them, as does ClothFX and SoftFX. There are also some good 3rd party .mdd readers out there.

I found it! with mdd_plug, it work only if I keep the mdd file name very short... like 01a, 01b... if its long... no luck, it will not load!
stooooopid!
im using 8.5 right now...

If you're still interested in a copy of CompLete just shoot me an email. I hope to have a new web site with all my plug-ins and such available in a week or two.

I think I remember something about there being a character limit on path names...not sure if it's just in regard to .mdd files though. I've also noticed (at least with 8.3) that if I have a scene open with some .mdd files applied, and I go to open another scene with .mdds, LW won't read them in. You need to physically quit out of the app, and re-launch the scene for it to "remember" where the .mdds are.
