I'm pretty new to LightWave and found some tutorials on the internet (followed all of your links, thanks for those :D)

But when I recreate the tutorial my objects stay much blockier than the one's in the video.

I think it has something to do with the display options, but I can not find it.

you may need subpatches turned on. Tab is the default key for it.
