I'm using Diskeeper Pro Premier 10 to defrag my hard drive.

Does having a power outage happen to your PC during defragmenting result in data loss or corruption of the data that was being defragged? Or does the defrag software protect your data from sudden shutdowns while defragging? Thanks.

Long ago, on Win98... we had a power loss on a workstation during a defrag (built in to the OS), and it destroyed the FAT. The only way to recover was to send the drive to one of the few data recovery shops (at the time) for ~$10,000... needless to say, we just sucked up the fact that the data was gone.

Nowadays, I'm not sure... recovery is cheaper, and software is better so there's a good chance that not all is lost... but being proactive with backup and using a UPS is a good way to be safe.

On an ntfs drive, only the 2 bits of data being worked on will get corrupted, the ntfs format will fix the index automatically. At worst a couple of files will be fubar.
