hi guys... i've tried and tried, and tried some more.
I just keep drawing a blank.

How do I go about making a really nice clean shiney chrome texture ?

The kind of chrome i'm after is what you would generally see on a new chrome tipped car exhaust, or the chrome arch part of a padlock... any suggestions ?

Software available: Photoshop, Lightwave.

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked out the presets in LightWave? You must also give it something to reflect in order to get good results.

yeah..i've had a look (a brief look) at the presets...can't seem to get a nice clean chrome...i'de prefer to stay away from the presets too...learn how to do it myself...thats where i need u guys.

So no one has any tips on how to make a nice chrome ?
Like what sort of texture should i apply to the "chrome" surface, and what level of reflectivity is good ?

I know most of it is trial and error... but surely you guys have made chrome before.

hi bounce

remember what chrome is and how it looks like ... its mor or less a mirror. now the problem is, you don't want to build the whole enviroment in 3d that is reflecting on the surfaces. But you can fake this by adding some white planars around the object (with 100% luminosity and 0% diffuse). or you can use a reflectivity map. i have made an exaple for you! pleas dont't take a closer look on it because its a 5 minute work and its realy bad!! you have to tweak it! you can also use a blurred image as the reflection map.

in my example i have a specularity of 70%, glossiness of 40%, reflection of 70% and i blurred the reflection by 5%

in my next post i'll show you what i mean with the planars arount the object.....

okydoky.... here is a screen_shot (i'm using lightwave too) take the time to play with the values and reflection maps. if you want to make a brushed chrome, you can use a procedural textures (turbulent nois) in the bump and the specularity channel! just play with is! i hope i helped you out with my posts

for that brushed metal you would have to stretch the procedural bump and spec map so that it looks like a bunch of long thin lines right? I'm just wondering because i have to use brushed metal for something in the future...

Antilles you'r right!! better you use more than 1 procedural layer!! you have to create large lines, short lines, you also need to rotate a few lines ..... you can play with it! after all you can copy the whole bump map into the spec. channel.

Great!

Thanks for the input TomG ! You have helped me heaps.

Thanks dude!

mostly its all easy to make..you just think to difficult

chrome is a mirror..but has some distortian in it..
and a little grey in diffuse(very little)

brushed metal..is just a collor grey..with a with a normally little stretched light reflection..and some dirt..(little) and a little scratch (bump map)
and a falloff map..and you have a realy nice metal

lookat 3d total.. for the tutorial.. its max.. but doesnt matter

Don't forget to lower your diffuse according to your reflection amount ;)
