My experience with Alienware is that they suck bigtime. They took 6 weeks to ship my computer to me, which means that by the time I got it, there was already new hardware out that was the same price I paid for my older stuff (which would have happened whether i had it or not but in this case, i didnt even get to use it before it was out of date). Their customer service outright lied to me about my order status, they had shoddy drivers installed, and they only offered WinME, which, as all even semi-intelligent people know, is the worst OS ever. It took me 2 weeks of tinkering just to keep my "performance gaming machine" from crashing every hour or so.
So... unless you like high-priced, fancy lookin, sub-par, no customer service, piece o' crud... I wouldn't buy Alienware. My friend got a FalconNW which he was happy with, they had good CS and service.

I was the ex-art director there at alienware... it seems whiterabbit ordered his computer during my stint there. During that time alienware was expanding, when I started, we where in a small one bay warehouse, in a year we had expanded to the two next door warehouses. The growing pains that we had hindered a lot of the customer experience, but I have to tell you that their computers are rock solid and as a company have grown to really create some stable computers. Of course we could build our own systems for cheaper, but they have dedicated staff that test and retest all components to make sure there where no conflicts, and they optimize the computer with the latest drivers and system tweaks to get every once of power.
For a long time I tried to get them to redesign the cases and finally they have, they look hot...

def a sweet case..............im really not sure about that monitor though.......on a 21" i was running games at 1600x1200 at 32bit with no slowdown at all....and this was on a geforce 3 Ti500.......1024x768 on a monitor 10" bigger would just be plain ugly! as far as working............well i would set it at 1280.....so thats not too bad....but i dont know, if its a 30" monitor i would rather have it at 1600...and get the extra workspace. If you have to work at 1280 on a bigger monitor all that means is everything will be bigger...........the whole point of getting a huge monitor is to be able to refine the res even higher and get even more space out of it.....otherwise you might as well just stick with a normal 21" as you will be getting the same workspace.
but eh, i would rather have 2 or even 3 21" monitors over 1 30" anyday! would actually prolly be cheaper if you didnt go LCD.

LCD monitors that are both gigantic (30" or so) and possibly widescreen also... that would just be fantastic to work on
i know that Alex A. has dual 23" Apple Cinema Displays so it sounds like the widescreen LCD's have his vote...
perhaps with LCD technology, larger displayes don't go up in price in gigantic leaps and bounds, at least.. perhaps not as much as CRT's :)
and with larger LCD's, i dont' think there is any clarity, color, or brightness diffuse on the corners... :)

You guys are pulling my leg right? You actually like that case design? I think it's pretty wretched. Easily one of the ugliest computers ever conceived.:thumbsdow

I think the design is pretty kewl! But I sure hope there is going to be a possibility to buy the just an empty case (more or less... just like the chieftec dragon cases).
I guess it'll be unaffortable at this time...

Ugly or not, at least Alienware is trying to do something different. Paintjobs and windows on the side just don't cut it for me. Finally, something you can put on your desk (probably need a big one) to amaze your buddies.

What did a pretty case ever to for you?
If you want something original: make it yourself.

Yeah I'd have to say, silly gimmicks like this would never get me to buy another Alienware. They'd have to personally apologize to me for my previous experience and then I'd consider it. However, pretty cases may look cool, but it's whats under the hood, so to speak, that matters. May have a fancy case but if it takes forever to render or cant handle the workload it doesnt matter for crap!

Pretty uncool man.

Trust me. I would really be a dork if I ever made my own original computer. It would have nipples and stuff...
I'm probably biased. I own an Alienware. Haven't had too many problems with it though. I'm sure this thing will be solid.

but judging by the specs in that article this machine is a beast!
i dont think it would have the slightest problem rendering anything.
anyone else notice though that the design is basically a green O2 with a few more curves and panels.

Sorry, I forgot to use smilies in my last post so people would know I was saying something I thought was funny.

Ummm, no. It looks nothing like an O2 other than they both have rounded edges. The O2, I guarantee you is much smaller and much less obnoxious than this thing. When I see an O2, it has a sort of high-tech Nike running shoe sort of look. AlienWare is going for an Alien head- Custom Import Sportscar hybrid sort of a look. Obviously there's a lot of market overlap between the PC hardware whore and guys who drive modified Civics or want to drive modified Civics; that's who they are trying to appeal to. Alienware tried to make a case that incorporates their logo and looks fast. SGI's case designs appeal to designers, and for the most part look elegant and clean. This Alienware thing looks like a toy.

Oooooooh.... it's really shiny!!!
I've been drooling over Alienware computers for a while now... course, I don't have the budget to get myself ANY kind of computer.... but I think if I did, I'd get one from these guys. I'll have to look into it some more... but that's where I'm leaning. Course, this new one looks kinda... funky... in a what's-that-b-movie-gizmo-doing-on-my-desk kind of way... :hmm: Heh. Now it just needs some extraneous neon lights on it, and some bubble tubing, just cause... yeah! :D

I want a comp with so many cooling fans on it that it sounds like a 359 dual straight stack cat powered pete cranking up.
And when the 15000rpm hard drive starts spinning I want it to give me a worried look on my face!
Yeah baby!!!

I'd rather have a pc sized alcove in the wall that I could just stick it in and not have to look at it anyway. Of course, the more likely scenario is that I'll just end up buying highend laptops when I get tired of looking at my big pc beside my desk and then packing it away when I'm not using it to make more space.

Alienware doesn't really design the cases; the small case is a shuttle, the laptop is a clevo ( I own one - my gf owns a shuttle case) and their regular desktop cases are well rated brand name cases ( I forget whose) that you can find elsewhere.
They do have those custom paintjobs, though. And they save people the hassle of building their own.
Their prices are much too high for me, though.

I like alienware's cases, but the same style can be achieved by buying your own case, it'll also be cheaper...

i think the current ones are by chieftec, not 100% sure
