I just downloaded Wings and things were going okay until I tried to make a primitive at which point the computer completely hardlocked and I had to restart it. After a little digging around it would seem that a couple of other people had this problem and the one thing they have in common with me is my Radeon 9700 Pro video card.

So now I'm just trying to find out if anyone ever discovered a fix for this. It just seems to be a very wierd crash for such a simple operation (making a cube).

I'm currently runninf Windows XP Pro SP1 with Direct X 9 and the lastest Catalyst drivers installed. Iwas kind of keen on playing around with this so any help would be appreciated.

This definitely is a driver issue. Wings does not use any OpenGL stuff which isn't well within the bounds of what this standard suggests. Furthermore, no app not running in kernel mode zero can lock you computer like that.
Only a few kinds of drivers (including the graphics driver) actually run in this mode which allows direct access to the hardware.

I hope Bob19971 doesn't mind me forwarding his tip. He posted this in wings' own forum:

The fix seems to be turn off your hardware acceleration. To do this go:
1) Display Properties
2) Select Settings Tab
3) Press Advanced Button
4) Select Troubleshooting Tab
5) Move Bar from Full to None

That seems a bit extreme but I guess I'll have to give it a go when I've got a free minute.
