After finding this site halfway through the last challenge I've been looking forward to the chance to participate. I've decided to do Cerberus (no, not THAT Cerberus (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=1621)) in this months challenge and got a pretty good start on one of the heads.

I didn't do any concept art and am fleshing out the design as I go. Let me know what you think so far, thanks.

Cool look. I like the big teeth/fangs in the back. Maybe some big ones in the front would be cool too. I'm looking forward to your progress!!!

Yeah, I was planning on putting some big chompers up there. Here's the first draft.

I dunno, they kinda make him look goofy. Maybe I'll shrink those middle ones a bit.

I started work on the rear leg tonight as well. The rest of the body is from a quick mesh I built Monday. I'll probably remodel the front half from the head down to add more detail.

I have to sleep a bit now, I've got work tomorrow.

Hey there Verminator - this is great!! I love Cerberus - such an awesome character!! Looking really cool so far - what software are you using??

Thanks Leigh - I'm using Animation Master (http://www.hash.com). It's all patch modeled, the head's about 2000 patches right now and the body's 2250. Damn, this thing's going to be at least 10,000 patches when it's done, my biggest model yet. I think that translates out to 160,000 polys at render time but I'm not sure.

I'm doing some work on the rear feet now and should have an update up before I go to sleep.

I'd make the front teeth shorter and the edge teeth larger and more into the edges maybe.
other than that great work!
like the back legs hole, but you should sculpt out the muscles more.

Quick update of the feet below. My girlfriend was in town last week so I didn't get much work done. These feet are huge, about 2000 patches apiece, and at this rate I don't know if I have the computer power to finish the model. Maybe I'll reduce geometry a little. Let me know what you think.

AWESOME MODEL DUDE!!!!!

This is some medical reference about real dogs teeths (it is amazing what you can find on the net this days :) )

and

Now about the model... if you check the links I posted then you'll realise that those in your model are almost human teeths... I'll try to make the ones in the front more anatomically correct and lees big... just big enough so that you can see the tip of them, of course the lips should also reflect the presence of the incisor teeths

Almost forgot.... this is an idea from my dark side: if you ever texture the model DO NOT forget to stain those BIG teeths with blood.. I mean, they should reflect that had been used to rip off someone's face.

Excellent References Apollux!

Thanks, those pages will help me greatly. Here's some work I just did on the head before I saw your references. I see now why my teeth haven't looked quite right, they're totally incorrect.

I've got the next three days off work so I'll have plenty of time to redo the teeth and hammer out the rest of the head. Now I'm off to the Casino to win big.

This is something that just kicked in my mind.... As far as i can see you are planning to put 3 heads on Cerberus, well, what about making them 3 diferent heads from 3 diferent dog races? I mean, if I'm right your head is a Bull Dog.. what about making the others a PitBull and a German Shepherd? Just try to think in the most agressive dogs that comes to your head.

Of course, been able to do it will depend on whow easy is to obtain the other 2 heads by tricking the one you already have and may be very time consumimg.

If you like my idea and want to really push the envelope, try making one of the heads human... yes, you read it right! One freaking and tortured human... male or female. (if you do one human then DO NOT put it in the center, it will have greater impact on one side.

as allways, keep up your good work!

I started in on the new teeth and jaws this afternoon with Apollux's excellent reference pics and made a bit of progress. Here's a few screen grabs.

Apollux - I was thinking about doing three different heads, though not neccessarily three different types of dogs, but doubt that I will have the time for them all. I'll stick with getting one solid head and a good body.

I thinks I'll have to assemble the three head and the body in a chor since the head's hitting 3600 patches with those lower teeth and will be pushing 5000 with the uppers. I'll go back and reduce geometry in the foot a bit before I copy it for the front to try and trim the fat on the body a bit.

Now time for bed.

Here's the head with new teeth. It's almost done and I'll polish it up after I flip and attach the two halves.
http://www.vermination.com/TempImages/SNAG-0010.jpg http://www.vermination.com/TempImages/SNAG-0009.jpg

Now I've got to finish up the front half of the body and get the front paws on. I think I'll have a near-finished product by the deadline, but it's gonna be close.

Well, the body's done, more or less. I think it came out rather well, if not a little dense. The mesh is 7500 patches, coupled with 5000 patch heads this thing's gonna bring my system to a crawl. Actually I haven't had much trouble working with it except for very long load times, like a couple hours to open the project. After that, manipulating it was fairly easy.

Here's some shots.

Here's some wireframes

body 1 (http://www.vermination.com/TempImages/SNAG-0013.jpg)
body 2 (http://www.vermination.com/TempImages/SNAG-0012.jpg)
front paw (http://www.vermination.com/TempImages/SNAG-0011.jpg)

I hope I can get a scene together with both body and heads tomorrow before work. If not this may be the last update before the deadline. It's been fun, and great work everyone.

Is the thread my entry in the challenge or do I need to submit the final renders elsewhere for judgement?

It's looking very cool!! Better finish him quickly!

Damn. I was so close, and it all came crashing down.

Woke up at noon this morning after working on Cerberus until 6 AM and getting him pretty much finished.
I opened up the Head file as soon as I got out of bed and it was finally finished loading around two.
Started loading the body file at arount 2:30 and it was at 70% when I left for work at 4.
Just got home from work at 1 AM and sat down to hammer out a scene with three copies of the head and the body file. I had them all positioned correctly (it looked so good too) and went to a top view, did a bound zoom and froze my PC. Had to kill the power and restart just now.

Sometimes the Wacom does that. Oh well.

I'll start loading the files again tonight and hopefully will get a new scene finished and rendered by the time I go to work tomorrow.

So there's no confusion. The model has been finished since the morning of the fifth, I just haven't been able to get it all loaded up and rendered yet, these load times are killing me. This model can't be that big, can it?
