kissb 08-07-2006, 05:53 PM Hi everybody,
I started this thing on some other forums already, so maybe some of you will know this stuff.
This is a fun project about few monters playing their game till now ( somebody opened the wrong door I guess )...I believe the inspiration is coming from a very old game made by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, and illustrated by Iain Mccaig...probably the LOTR trilogy also helped to start thinking about something like this.
I'll start with the early sketches.I will try to give you a link to the high res versions as well.Plese don't forget that the 3D stuff is pretty WIP, so it will change a lot I guess, and I'll try to work more on it then before.Enjoy :)

I'm using Lightwave and XSI for the modeling, and of course Zbrush for the details.

HIGHRES :

Some part of the scene is way older than the rest, because I used some of my first models when I built the scene ( the guy on the left ).The newest object is the guy on the right side. Here is the wire of the older version of the scene :

Some test with the Zbrushed geometry :

There is no bump on this one, and the armor isn't displaced.I used mental ray for these and the following images.

Here is the first character I started to render.Almost every texture was procedural on this one.The armor had a combination of PS painted displacements and procedural bump, and the face had a quick hand painted bump for the small wrinkles, the rest was generated with simbiont using the existing darktrees.
Actually I'm not really happy with this guy, but I don't want to do it again :)

The second guy have a bit better shading I think. The textures of this dude was done with simbiont and PS ( I only used it for the eyes ).I've made a tiny-viny "making of" about the rendering and comp of his ( her? ) face.

Here are the layers I've rendered for the last one ( I believe all of them ).I've used an older version of MR when I worked on him I think..
image1 (A) :
1:color, generated with darktree
2:occlusion + color, just to show how the occlusion pass look like..
3:only FG
4:all together
image2 (B) :
1: sss samples from the environment map ( i changed the contrast of it, because this is usually much darker then the one that gathering samples from lights)
2: sss using scene lghts ( also added some extra contrast, so you can see what's happening)
3: sss together
4: sss combined with A/4
image3 (C) :
1: scpecular of the scene lights
2: reflection (environment, using different glossy values)
3: direct illum of the scene
4: together with B/4
image4 (D) :
1: eye only
2: hair + occlusion on the surface
3: painted layer in PS ( will be 3D )
4: together with C4

WOW
Could I see a texture flat just for the color and spec map. I just want to see how you have it laid out. I know it will be laid out awesome but I just want to see it for learning reasons. This is amazing stuff.
Did you model these posed?
Oh yeah 5stars well worth it !

08-08-2006, 08:02 AM
Hi,
as I mentioned the textures are procedurals, generated in rendertime combining different components (fractals, perlin-noise, whatever).I can bake it to the UVmap, but I won't because I'm lazy.
But I'll show you the result :
http://www.tofy.hu/goblins/diffuse.jpg
This was the color pass for the guy on the middle. And I didn't use specular maps.
And yes, they are modeled like this...

Hey kissb, really great work man.. your shading and lighting rocks! my only crit is the pose on the left character is a bit akward.. but I'll guess thats soon to my fixed.

Really great stuff Balazs, good job. This is what I am calling complex scene:thumbsup: , superb details on characters and great texures.
I have some ideas about middle guy, I think, that his muscles/body should be more separate, all muscle group like shoulders, biceps etc. should be more separate, and I think that something is wrong with the knee of left guy (from anatomy angle) but only my two cents:)
I really like attention to detail and their poses, this will be great scene, keep it up
:bounce:
Hope to see more soon:applause:

Unbelievable. I couldn't think it was only procedural texture...Modelling,pose,lighting, all nearly perfect. 5 stars is'nt enough and we'll have to find another system to reward such work.
Next step pleeeeease !

What to say?! Just absolutely awesome! Where is this 10 stars button??
I just love the expressions you painted on their faces, the second guy looks so crazy, the poses are really lively. I'm amazed with the renders too...top notch.
This image got something very familiar, I was a big fan of those RPG in-a-book, I am sure I already saw the artwork you speak of, which book was it from?
And..uhh..do you plan to model a background? :deal:

All about Maya, generic level (before Z Brushing) is possible to do with Blender and sculpturing with ESSPRESSO tools without any problem. Is it animation or static scene only? Dudes looks great. Just years of practice. Agreed with the rest. Masterpiece. I volted three times.
Wow! i'm verry impressive!

this is the first piece that i feeled it is the best of what i have alreay saw, realy so so great job you did on this one, you inspired me i'm about to create an animation and this work realy inspired me alot with the Lion model here in the WIP forum check it out -the lion- you will love it.
you gave great personalities to the three characters each has its unique one and because there poses are professional the image reminds me of the great fine art ages in europe like the realistic paintings.check this out:

Hi everybody,
and thanks for the comments.
Iceblaster : I'm testing the Tuborg products and doing some stuff for IO in my sparetime...
SlayerCZ : there are some problems with that guy on the left, but I hope I'll fix them when I get there. When I built the guy in the middle I tried to avoid from the over-emphasized muscles, because it's one of my biggest problem with most 3d stuff on the net.Creatures have fat on their body, I can see it in the mirror every morning.
D-E-A-N : I can make you a screenshot I guess, but it's pretty simple. There are 4 "important" spotlight in the scene, and some weaker additional pointlights for a better specular. But I'll look into it..
Tartare : I don't think that this composition existing somewhere else, but there are some similar stuff for sure..
Rambiert : It's static and heavy...I don't have the force with me to move it.
Hi,
as I mentioned the textures are procedurals, generated in rendertime combining different components (fractals, perlin-noise, whatever).I can bake it to the UVmap, but I won't because I'm lazy.

this is insane!!Lovely modeling and texturing!the lighting is fantastic!!
can you explain how to separate render channels in mental ray?
For the displaced models do you use displacement maps calculated in render time or directly the hi res models imported from zbrush in maya(i guess maya)..
