Hi, im looking for a little help with poly modeling that i am going to convert to subD's. How do i make an edgeloop around the mouth without creating a 3 sided polly on the corners? Do you have any tips for me to help direct me so i model the corect way :) Thanks alot.
I am also having problems converting this to a SubD mesh.. it tells me in the comand line to check my script editor to see why it didnt convert, ... in the script editor it says
Error: polyToSubdiv1 (Poly To Subdiv Node): One or more edges is nonmanifold.
// Nonmanifold geometry cannot be converted to a subdivision surface.
// To clean up nonmanifold edges, use Polygons->Cleanup with the nonmanifold option. //
// Error: Command polyToSubdiv failed. Open Script Editor for details. //
select -r polySurface182 ;

when i do that it takes a couple faces near the eye and selects them for some reason? ... now at this time if i convert to SubD it converts but all the faces turn to circel and makes my mesh look like its made out of a bunch of dots.... maybe you know what i mean? If so please help me out :P thanks alot :)

here are a few more images to better explain. the image with the selected faces is what it does acter i Polygon/Cleanup .. then the dot-like image is what the result is when i convert that to SubD.. again thanks for any help you can give me.

Nonmanifold usually means you have an edge somewhere that has more than 2 faces coming off it, could be a doubled face or a polygon somewhere sticking out like a T-junction, that you should delete. Sometimes this happens with the extrude command on the wrong setting... just look around in face-selection mode, click on all the faces one by one...

If that doesn't work, do the automated cleanup, then export the poly as a dxf or obj, re-import it and it should work.

About edge-loops, I think they're a bit over-rated, also IMO the fear of triangles is a bit exaggerated and generalized when it comes to Maya and SubD's... see my posts in this thread:

Just realize that a triangle will tend to pull up the surface inside its borders in a hump compared to the surrounding quads (in a SubD), and then you can use this property to place it where you need a bump anyway. The 5-sided poly tends to do the same along the edge where the extra edge terminates, but to a much lesser degree, hardly noticeable. So the 5-sided poly is your friend, if you want to avoid a triangle but can't. :)
