thank u, it will surely help :)
08-11-2006, 03:06 AM
thanks a lot!
08-11-2006, 02:46 PM
safe05, when you click on the links, the links go dead or about halfway load and stop, not sure whats causing that problem or if you knew, just a heads up.
08-11-2006, 02:48 PM
sorry double post
08-11-2006, 10:57 PM
Dude, you are the shizzle!
08-12-2006, 03:36 AM
Thanks all, glad you like em. :)
Aquila: try right-clicking and "saving as..." for the movie. if it's still causing you problems, let me know which links you're trying and I'll dig a little deeper. Good luck! :)
08-12-2006, 04:22 AM
Cool that advice on the links worked, thanks :)
hrmm one thing here though? Once I got the movie dl... player didnt show the videoside it only played the voice. I got a message saying the required compressor could not be found. I tried searching for updates on rt but its up to date, any suggestions/directions there?
08-12-2006, 04:55 PM
Hmm...try grabbing the most recent Quicktime installer. Quicktime 7.03+ is needed for the h.264 codec. Let me know if this doesn't work. Cheers!
08-12-2006, 07:07 PM
yup got it workin bud, just watched the first 5. These videos....imo should be shipped with 3dmax, they are very informative, clear and easy to understand, you did great job on them, keep them coming and thanks a million!
08-12-2006, 10:17 PM
I've gone through and watched a few of these.very well done and informative...2 questions though
where is the "shadows" tutorial... #19 I think ??
And what is the BrMax button to the right of the MAxScript button ??
Thanks for taking the time to make them
08-13-2006, 01:21 AM
Thanks for the compliments!
Learning new software can be very intimidating. I didn't have any help learning Max back in v1 (actually 3D Studio r4 for DOS), so I feel a personal obligation to (hopefully) make the process a little easier for others. I'm happy that you're finding them useful, it means a lot to me. :)
imgumbydammit: The shadows one (in addition to about 10 more) are coming soon. I just wanted to have a little place holder while I finished up the global illumination stuff. As for the BrMax button...oops. :) I'm part of the Brazil/2 beta team and they have a couple scripts related to it.

Hey safe05 :) I have question about formating materials to use in max.
I currently have many jpeg files Id like to open and work with in Max. But everytime I try I get an error, Im guessing the files cannot be loaded because of incorrect file format. I noticed you somehow loaded a head picture in your organic head tutorial via photshop?
How was this done and what format should these files be in so that I might convert them and get things rolling?
08-14-2006, 03:55 PM
I'm surprised to hear that you're having problems with JPEGs. Max's image format support is actually quite robust, I mean they still support SGI RGB format. :) What does the error message say?
08-14-2006, 04:00 PM
File open failed:C\Documents and settings blah blah blah lol. and then when i try importing them, they dont even show up in the menus rofl, so its something Im not doing correctly, Im just not sure what.....
ok so i just tried importing and it says "no appropriate import module found", then it says "improper file format."
08-14-2006, 04:06 PM
Wow cool. I've been wanting to get into 3Ds for some time now. Maybe now i have a reason.
08-15-2006, 04:06 AM
Now when you say "manipulate it in max", what would you like to do with it? From what you've said so far, it sounds like one of two things:
(1) you're using "File->Import" which is not the way to go. That's only used for importing scenes into Max. If you're specifically interested in using textures/images, I would recommend having a look at part 13 & 14 of the series.
(2) another possibility is that your JPEG images are corrupt. go to the "maps" directory under your 3D Studio Max root and try loading one of those.
Let me know if you're still having problems.
great tuts. new to max from maya. about the sixth one in and it's really helping. thanks
08-16-2006, 01:04 AM
Good deal. Glad you like em. :)
08-22-2006, 09:00 PM
Awsome, just awsome. This really helped me to start : ), thanks alot mate!
08-23-2006, 04:32 PM
These are absolutly amazing, thank you very much for your hard work.
08-29-2006, 10:14 PM
I'd like give another possible solution to Aquila's problem with importing Jpeg files. You could open your jpeg in Photoshop and check that your jpeg image is not saved in CMYK mode since Max only works with RGB based image files when importing.
To get rid of that you simply need to change image mode to RGB within Photoshop or else and save it again efore trying to import it in Max.
Well it could be something else, but maybe it helps.
PS : Sorry for my bad english...

Thanks for the great VTMs on max, I'm about to work though a few tonight. I'm into game modeling, I.E. for UT2007 so if you have any other TuTs that would help let me no.
PS As UT2007 uses normal maps I could do with a VTM on this, my normals look flat and dirty. Anyway thanks man I'm sure there's a few things I still could learn in these...
09-08-2006, 03:51 AM
Good tip Velvet Dragon, I completely forgot about that.
Pixelgen: Have a look at my resource site (http://forums.ego-farms.com) there are tutorials for organic modeling, normal maps, some digital painting, etc. Have fun! :)
03-20-2007, 06:18 PM
just a bump to let others know a few more tutorials have been posted including ones on:
- animation (keyframing, constraints, controllers)
- wired parameters
Very good videos and a help to me and my students.
01 around the world is the link corupt as I only get 316k download and not 7mb and it say's not a valid movie file.
Thanks for all your hard work

happy to help. :) You might want to try downloading again, or right-click and saving it to your computer since it works for me.

Added several more 101 tutorials bringing the count to 32 in this series. There are many more tutorials in other sections as well. Enjoy!
07-27-2007, 12:30 AM
Added a few more tutorials among others in more specific (project oriented) areas. See original post for full list.
08-25-2007, 04:40 PM
Tnx for the tuts...haven't checked them out yet (will do that first thing tomorrow) but i already installed quicktime just so i would be able to watch it (normally my allegiance lays to mediaplayer so switching sides means allot :D) but one tiny question: Are these tutorials good for people with older versions, or will i - halfway through each tut - discover that a certain button doesn't exist making me go all catatonic? So i have 3ds max 6 instead of 3ds max 8. I kinda bought an older cheap version...an upgrade or buying a new version would force me in not eating for months...so that wasn't an option :p
08-26-2007, 04:46 AM
thanks for checking them out. :) The 101 series should transfer well into the older versions, but those with associated files are saved for v7. So, you may run into some problems there. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
08-26-2007, 03:35 PM
For those of you that haven't checked out Eric's great site, you're missing out!
You should also download and install the FREE VLC player to watch these vids. Much better than Quicktime IMO.
grab it here:
Eric unselfishly donates a lot of time/effort and also has just released 3 or 4 more videos in the last week alone.
The one series on using splines to model a face is awesome.
I love that site!
08-27-2007, 11:30 AM
Hey :p Very busy with watching (and memorising ;) ) your awesome tuts, yet i've run into a tiny problem. As i have mentioned before i use 3ds max 6 and in the seventh 101 tutorial which covers polygons and the edit poly function. Well 'edit poly' cannot be found in my modifier list...i kinda tried to use 'edit mesh' because you also have those vertices and face options etc. but at a certain point when you get deeper into those edit poly functions i can't continue...could this function be found under a different name or should i just ignore it (or will i miss some hefty important basics if i do so)
Tnx allot :p and euhm sorry to steal several minutes of your life :D
08-28-2007, 01:24 AM
Thanks for the plug, Hooper. ;)
As for an EditPoly equivalent in v6...not really. You can get some of the same functionality from an old set of scripts which I think was called MeshTools. Unfortunately, most of the options in EditPoly were added in v7.
08-28-2007, 10:01 AM
Ahhh k, tnx, very much appreciate the dedication you put into this.
Ooh and btw, when I try to open the file used in the render tutorial I get some 'missing dlls' error...does this mean i'm missing a certain plug-in? :p or is it plainly because i'm using inferior software? Or because the universe is conspiring against me? All very valid reasons, really.
08-29-2007, 03:34 AM
Happy to give something back. :D The missing DLLs are a nasty little bug that occurs when using custom renderers on older versions of Max. I use Brazil for many of my renderings and it got stuck deep in the file. Just click through it and you'll be fine.
08-30-2007, 05:09 PM
K tnx for the feedback.
By the way. There seems to be a problem with tutorial 15 (UV-coordinates or something like that is the title) When i try to open it there comes an error (all the other tuts work perfectly fine so i don't think i'm doing something wrong ;) )
08-31-2007, 01:23 AM
What error are you seeing? Worked fine over here.
09-01-2007, 02:38 AM
#15 worked fine for me. I'm about to start #17! w00t! I love these dang things! Everything I can see and it's all the same on my screen and I feel that I've already learned more just doing these than I did when I spent a year at UAT. Then again, the past few days I've dedicated about 6 hours a day doing these tutorials and playing around with the program.
Might also add that the UVW Map puzzle was getting frustrating after a few mins! But I got it. :D
09-01-2007, 03:15 AM
Hmm strange...i'll try to download it again in the morning...it was some error said like...
ERROR -2041 or something like that...can't really check right now, it's on another computer -.- this one is too slow to run Max and the one which can run Max isn't connected to our prescious world wide web.
Anyway, I love these tutorials too...i really like learning Max...yet the more time i spend learning it the more I start to sence that I'll like err...never be skilled enough to do what everyone else here is doing, lol :p
09-02-2007, 06:52 PM
Hehe, seems like there's nothing wrong with the file anyway.
I don't know how it happened, but for some strange reason my video file was only 139kB large, so that couldn't be right ;) . I've just downloaded it again and it works fine. Yipie!
The only sad thing is that I can't use a single one of those .max files :'( isn't there some sort of convertor i could download?
09-03-2007, 05:01 PM
hehe...yah, sounds like your download just got cut off. Happy to hear it's now working. As for the files...next weekend I might be revisiting some of these and see if FBX file format will work for distribution with older versions of Max. If so, I'll let you know or just keep an eye on EGo Lounge for updates. (where the videos are hosted)
09-21-2007, 10:17 AM
Hey, i've got a rather silly question here
I've been busy learning Max for the past few weeks (kinda started reading 2 books too because i've only got 100 more mb of download capacity before i switch to smallband :'( )
And now i'm wondering:
When i look at the forum, most (like 100%) of the 3d art created uses more then 1 program. For example 'ZBrush'. I looked ZBrush up in google etc. and found out it's some 2.5d program which can be used in conjunction with for example 3ds max. Well, what is the use? Should i first spend many more months/years mastering Max before I look into that or has it got immediate benifits? For example: If people use this program to texture their objects then would it be a waste of time to learn how to do it in Max?
Maybe a bad example but that's kinda what I would like to know. Should i be way more advanced in Max before i trouble myself learning another piece of software or could learning it like save time in the long run?
(Ooh and btw, is it a good thing to always make your objects out of one piece (using attach or collapse or whatever) or is that troublesome for texturing/animating?)
I'm kinda cautious about all of this because i'm scared of messing everything up during the learning process  Please forgive me! :D
09-22-2007, 01:40 AM
quite a few questions that could easily fill several pages because it "depends." :) Since you're just starting, don't worry about all the other packages out there and just try to get comfortable with one. Once you fully understand modeling, animation, texturing, etc. then start looking at how other packages may help you create your artistic vision quicker or more efficiently. For example, ZBrush is often used as a "detailing pass" on geometry. you model a basic object in Max, bring it into ZBrush for hires sculpting, then export special maps that preserve this detail when bringing the model back into Max. Since you're not at this stage yet, don't worry about it. :) too many people think they need to learn all of these different packages/techniques right away without any reason other than someone else used it to create some cool image/animation. Focus on Max until you're comfortable with the basics and you can successfully take an idea and put it in pixels. Then start expanding your arsenal to include other packages that may make your life a little less painful or a little more creative.
And don't worry about "messing up", messing up *is* the learning process. ;)

I cannot log in to your new website. I forgot my old password and started the automated process of getting it changed. I have a snag in that I my mail server has blocked the second email with the temp password and I therefore am unable to proceed any further with the process.
I emailed you via this site as there seems to be no way to contact you on the Ego Lounge site unless I am logged in.
I hope you get this and I apologize for interrrupting this thread with this problem...but I did not know of any other way to reach you.
10-21-2007, 02:08 AM
Login troubles resolved and actually a few new tutorials posted. Enjoy!
