View Full Version : new to XSI, numeric panel question
bolek 08-07-2006, 02:01 PM I have used LW/C4D and max and when you perform functions like bevel and extrude in those apps, you just do it right on the model. In XSI a numeric panel comes up where you put in how much you want to bevel/extrude etc. Is there anyway not to have that panel come up and be able to just do bevel/extrude etc. right on the model like in the other apps ?

No, you cant do that. In fact this is one of my biggest shock when i tried xsi for the 1st time. However as time goes by, you'll appreciate modelling in xsi. Especially the selection system is really elegant, and the best imo compared to any other software out there.
tip: to extrude, just use ctrl-d shortcut and transform move the polygons straight away. (No panel)

Nice thing about the ppg that pops up is you can go back later and adjust it. Until you Freeze, that is..
For example, create a cube, select one of the sides, "Insert Poly", then select the inner poly, and extrude it out. You can now go into the op stack (via explorer), click the icon of the 1st extrude op, adjust the slider and notice what it does.

I agree with what has been said so far... The ppg's very useful, and its better with them than without.
But if you want to do away with them popping up, simply deactivate them in interaction in the file preferences panel.

Aside from bevel you dont really need to interact with the ppg for common operations like extrude and inset. Like they said just use ctrl + d and move\scale

That's right, and XSI's Bevel feature absolutely needs a dialog box because you get TONS of control. And I use a lot of the options all the time, because they're very convenient, such as: distance, center, uniform mitering, nb subdivisions, extrapolation
Of course, if all your options are:
- width of the 1-time chamfering
then yeah, you can get access to all the available options directly on the model

Select the thing you need to control in the ppg, press F4 then click-drag with the mmb in the view.
