View Full Version : character - cartoony winged girl
nuclearbum 08-07-2006, 09:59 AM hello peoples!
this is a redesign of an old character of mine. one of my firends hates it, haha, he likes the older less cartoony looking design, other than that i haven't had much feedback, so go for it peoples! and i'll be posting progress!
I would like to do an animation with this character, another character, and my mech and mousy like creature i build a while back (they probably won't change that much). i've got a silly little story script that i'm also working on for this little short (haha, like it'll ever get done! but i can always dream.) that should be done sometime before the 22nd century. for now at least i'll hopefully have some demo worthy stuff, even if the animation is never made.
ok, so here's the new concept:

and here's a current render of the current progress (right now the textures are just place holders). the hair... i think i might go with a hair simulator, but i'll see. also the boots and gloves are just being mirrored, though i do plan on making it not so symetrical.

I like your style for this character, but please change the color of her wing bones to something else than skin color, it’s creeping me out. :)
But again it’s a great looking model.

thanks remi for the reply!
welp, i just finished my last class of college for a good long time (unless i decide to go to grad school), so i can come back here to my forgotten post, hehe.
here's some newer shots and close ups.
i'm still modelling, and the textures may change dramatically as right now they're just quick setups for a pretty render. the wing.... it'll be covered with feathers one day! so untill then, you're going to have to freak out at them and the fact that her face makeup is also on them!
the hair...... i've been looking into hair solutions, for now and probably a while i'm going to hold on the hair and just use the ultra cartoony helmet hair.
her back! i'll tame that butt a little, cuz i think it's too pronounced. though maybe not?

she's got ginormous eye folds! ok, should the eyes be brought in closer? or is it looking ok? hows the nose? not round and big enough for that ultra cutesy look?
http://ieng9.ucsd.edu/%7Etespirit/cgtalk/dalses_xp/faces.jpg
the finger tip material color has got to go. maybe make it the same dark grey as her shirt? maybe make it brilliant pink?
http://ieng9.ucsd.edu/%7Etespirit/cgtalk/dalses_xp/gloves.jpg
these boots can logically be put on without the aid of magic.

when hair solutions go bad. I TOLD HER NOT TO STICK HER FINGERS IN THE LIGHT SOCKET!

hahahahaha, that last picture reminds me of the hair of the Nox in the first season of Stargate SG-1. (If anyone remembers...)
Anyway, nice model, looking good!

nice! looks dead on concept to me : )
maybe bring those eyes in closer a little though like you say, i think the size and shape is fine although the lower fold is looking a little deep at the moment. still, it gives her quite a sombre, depressed look the way it is now so maybe that's the look you were after...?
good stuff so far though!

alrighty, that bottom eye fold was a bit extreme, so i tamed that down :)
eyes have been moved closer together and also some general face tweaks to get a smoother surface.
aside from modelling, the more permanant textures have been started. i'm using the cheap sss hack of a red tone fall off map cuz i think it gets the job done and it's a heck of a lot faster in rendering.
ok, so here's the working of the head!

i'm taking my sweet time on this :) she's my baby, if i finish, then what would i do? :P
ok, so i finally finished the belt buckles for the gloves, now everything is matching! i'll get to making things not semetric for the gloves and boots after i get these wings done.
so here's a kinda rough draft at the feathers. unlike my last model, i'm not just texturing a nurbs surface for a feather. the main reason is.... shadow casting. i gotta use raytracing for getting decent cast shadows using the opacity map method. 15 minute renders = no no for an animation. actually it was this very reason i decided for a redesign of this character (it started off just as wing concept drawings, and then bam, i kinda drew a whole body, haha).
coming in at a whopping 20 second render, this solution seems a lot more managable, but the poly's are going to eat up my puter, haha.
let me know what you think about the direction or if you have some suggestions for making feathers :)
and yeah, you can comment about anything else too. but only this time :P

i know, i'm freaken slow! haha
ok, welp, the wing idea looks like it might work, and i might be able to come up with some crazy automated rig for it too. maybe i'll just make the feathers cloth and be done with it and just tell people that i'm stylizing the animation :P wow, actually i wonder if i can do something similar to that...... if it works, i'll upload the max script...
the fluffy feather stuff at the base of the wing is being experimented with. i was thinking about using a fur generator to make it, but so far all my attempts only do two things: look like crap and make it take 5-10 times longer to render. anyone else ever deal with something like this? i might just have to make tiny feathers and just manually place em.

Really nice, go on, can't wait to see final render!
