I'm working on my Demo Reel for my course and I need some help on creating a really really GOOD looking explosion. I know how to create fire and all, but I want this sucker (explosion) to look really good =)

Anyone got any links or helpful hints?

you could try using live footage of an explosion? I'm not sure on how you do a 3D explosion.

Hehehe explosion in Maya !!!! Never!

Just kidding....

U have to set the fire particle system that Maya has along with a strong field (wind, vortex....anything u like)
Connect the fire particle system to the field and then go to Connection editor and connect the volume of the field to the birth and population of the particle system.....that did the trick for me

you can also use P-fx, which is fairly simple and quick

oh *lol* I'm still not down with the 'Maya Lingo' yet ;)

I've used p-fx before in a scene but that was more of a 'fire' look instead of an explosion look....;)

it's a good workflow the use of sprites. two or three particle sistems one for the combustion, one for the fire, and other for the smoke. Animate incandescende. but, what kind of explosion do you want?

There's a 2D particle proram called Illusion by Impulse. You might ant to check it out. It will save you tons of Render time.

yep, XanderFX is right...

u can take few illusion's explosions with default settings - you will be very pleased... great 'little' software...
:)

and I saw that there is illusion implemented in new Discreet's Combustion 2 - I have recognized few examples :) (yeah, there is excellent particle system in Combustion 2)

you can make the same particle FX in maya using sprites, and in 3D!!!! ... :D ( i export the illusion sprites bitmaps to maya, and use on my own sprites ;) ).

Yeah Deepray thats a good idea. Another great effect is to map the Illusion explosions into a light to cast the matching light from the explosion onto your characters and BG's.

the explosion i want.....well i have a character that I'm going to have explode into part and pieces. From inside the character I want a small firball o get bigger and then get REALLY big. Nothing to fancy, just something that looks REALLY nice :D Sezumsayin?

You can either animate the character exploding by keyframing the pieces or use the rigid body shatter to explode the char into lots' o pieces. then you can just compsite in the explosion in AFX, or Shake. You can use some lighting effects to cast light from inside the character as he's cracking. You can also try rendering different parts in layers to composite them in front of and behind the pieces. I think you might get a better result using the ilusion explosions rather than a particle explosion, unless you really know your dynamics. It could be a valuable learning experience to try it both ways.

Hope this helps

thanks man cool :)

i've bin playing around with the shatter recently, i made something shatter, but is it possible to make it explode again when the broken up pieces hit an object? thats a good idea with the lighting from with inside the object :) thanx

like a phere in a room, and it explodes in mid air and the pieces fly out and when they hit the walls i want them to shatter again. is that possible? or do i have duplicate the shattered pieces and add Another shatter to those?

:)
