Hey All!

Been long since I've involved myself in the CG world actively, due to my last job constraints. Now that I'm coming abck home, I'll have free time. I decided to start a free CG magazine (published in PDF format) MAINLY FOR BEGINNERS. I decided to start this for two reasons - to improve my own skills as well as improve my mates' (IT'S YOU ALL) as well.

For now I've planned the title of the Magazine to be '3D BLAST'. I have few cover art for the same, but also contributions are welcome as I'm not as good in 2D as in 3D.

I'm planning to get the first edition out in November or December if things go well and now the plans till now for the magazine is 30 pages - I'd be glad if it becomes more than that.

What's the Magazine going to offer?
1. Tutorials (of course, as it's mainly for beginners - for now I have plans only for 3D but if anyone can make 2D, the door's wide open)
> one definite tutorial on 3D modeling
> others if possible like animating, texturing, rendering, etc.
2. Articles on 3D movies as well as movies where graphics plays an important role like our famous LoTR
3. Tips & Tricks on software usage
4. Gallery

Any suggestions are welcome.
I am a 3DMaxer. So guys using other soft are welcome on articles for the same.
Come join hands and let's rock!

Hiya 3dzombie. I think the problem people aren't getting excited about it is that there are already so many resources outthere that are free...why do all the work to make another?
Just my 2cents, but you may make your life easier if you decide to compile some of the best web tutorials (get the authors permissions and jazz them up a bit to unify them) into a magazine format? Maybe add your own ontop?

Most "beginners" are usually hobbyists who aren't likely to spend much money on this hobby until they get better at it. So, making a magazine aimed at beginners is not really a good idea. A magazine for intermediate or advanced-level artists is much more likely to sell.

Edit: Nevermind, I just read it was free. Oops, I'm dumb.

That said, I would love to do something for a magazine, but I have almost no 3D experience, I'm all 2D. The only things I can think of are skin tone tutorials (...I can make them, yet I can't seem to apply those ideas to my own art). Those would be good for begginer/intermediate 2D artists, and perhaps character modellers. I don't really know.

I'd like to get involved. I'm at about intermediate in 3d now. It would be a lot of fun to help explain some of this stuff. Let me know how I can help out.

Sounds awesome! Our site will most likely be going down a similar route but with game art. Good luck and all the best :D

Just had a look at your site requiem2d, and it looks pretty slick. I'm just about to sign up to the forum!

Anyway back to topic - I think your idea is great Mouli (can I call you Mouli?), as I felt (well still feel) abit lost with all this free tutorials and such, it is abit daunting.

I like softdistortion's idea, so i'm gonna jog with it for alittle.

How about you set up a weekly/monthly course planner, using a variety of pre-made and your own tutorials. You could have areas under different, simple headings (eg. 'So you want to make video games?') and give them the relevent basic tutorials for that area (eg. Game Art - basic box modelling, textureing etc.)

The tutorial mega sites (pixel2life, tutorialized) may have hundreds of tutorials, but theres no proper quality control, or any real order to them

Also i'm no real fan of .pdf, and what with the age of the always-on net connection, could the format be a a simple series of webpages?

Just bouncing around ideas,

benj
