View Full Version : New to NURBs, Need some help...
altruizine 01-22-2003, 08:11 PM Hello!
Using Maya 4.5.
I am currently working on a project where I need to model a Parking Meter. I'd like to do this with NURBs for it's resolution independence and mapping qualities, but I've got a few questions that maybe some kind soul out there can give me some pointers on.
Actually, what I'd like is maybe an overview on the approach to modeling something like this. I'm getting a bit frustrated because I can't seem to figure out how to start or what methods will even yield the result I need. I'd like to keep this as accurate as possible and I think that's where I'm getting stuck. I've attached an image of the meter - the part I'm really getting stuck on is in the main body where the disk shaped section meets the body. I just don't know how to go about that - which is very frustrating because it seems that the answer should be simple.
If you have some direction pointers, I'd love to hear them. How would you go about those shapes while retaining a high degree of accuracy and good mapping coordinates?
Thanks very much!

The Cross

The circular part can easily be done with stretching and triming and duplicating and scaling opposites with a nurbs sphere.
I'd perferr to a cubic CV curve tool and duplicate opposing curves, to set the mark as to how thick i would make it. Drawing another curve for the center ( Grid recommended) i would then birail it.
A quarter sphere with a minor rearangement should work well for the glass part. So i would have made that Glass first using it as a guideline for the first curves.
I don't know how much you know about modeling, But i can tell your dedicated to it by the way you want that lower pat of the sphere beveled.
..................................................
Tricky to explane but i'll try.
Using a duplicate of the curve made for the first center birail, i would line it in place of where the circle meets the flat surface. And lave a small space in front the flat part.
When it's in place. I would then Duplicate that curve again and pull it just a little behind the flat surface.
...................................................................................................
[FOR THE CURVE BEHIND THE FLAT SURFACE]
I would then grab the verticies of that curve and scale it bigger than the curve it came from.
(The Plan is to make a curve shaped like a dull L shape and biral it.)
Before you make the dull L shaped curve you want the "Curve behind the surface" to be in lined with the surface. So......What i would do is.
Snap it to the surface, and in the channel box...Get the numbers as to how much foward it went. Then UNDO the move.
Then punch in the numbers you took in whatever axis is faced ( might be X might be Z..Depending on which direction your facing.)
When you got that done you can then draw the Dull L shaped curve and birail the 2 last curves i spoke of.
If you managed to understand the vision converted to words you should have the kind of merge you wanted.
Remember when dealing with curves, It's always better to snap the pivot to where you want/need it to be.
If you don't understand what i'm talking about, then give me a shout and i'll try to clearify what i just said.
Maybe with images.
Oh...And if your more into Nurbs more than Pollygons..You'll find that "alot" of pollygon modelers will critisize you for a joke.
Me on the other hand....I use boath Polly's and Nurbs. Polly's are faster. But Nurbs are what i use for craftstmanship.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I considered polys but because a) I'd like to learn nurbs modeling more and b) I need to allow for high tesselation and don't want HUGE poly counts all the time, I decided against polys, but if time becomes an issue on this I may go back...ergh.
The part that's got me more confused than anything is where the disk meets the body on the side. That join with a bevel is pissing me off.. :)
I guess I've been toying with different topology layouts and not landing on one specifically because I just don't have the skills to make a decision.
Information like you provided helps a lot too... I appreciate you writing that and if you have the time, I'd love to see what you're talking about a bit more visually either from screenshot or drawing on the image I posted...
Thanks... this is great!
