View Full Version : Help please! Cloth going crazy!

I'm working on a scene for a client with lots of cloth solvers.

The problem is this: when I run the simulation, all looks fine, but when I play back the simulation after it's calculated, some vertices are popping randomly. Only very small amounts, but it's very ugly.

This ONLY happens when I play it back, when I watch it calculating, I can't see any of this 'popping' effect. It always does this no matter how many times I delete the cache and re-solve.

The exact situation is this: I've currently got about 12 solvers each with their own piece of cloth (there will be lots more later), and collision objects sharing between pairs of solvers. I started working on the scene on one machine, then moved the scene and cache files to another machine to carry on working. I _think_ the problem only started after I moved machine. I started working with Maya 4.02, now I'm working on Maya 4.0, could this be anything to do with it?

Please does anyone have any idea what's going on? I've got to have this all finished by tomorrow night for the client and I'm tearing my hair out!

Thanks

OK so now I go back to the first computer, delete the caches and run the simulation again and it's fine, no popping at all!

[EDIT] Not none at all, almost none but not quite...

Strange...

would it have anything to do with the specs? The one it's fine on is a Dell Precision 510 (dual Xeon) and the 'bad' one is a 2.4GHz P4 with a Wildcat... curioser and curioser. It's not that much of a problem since I'll be running the final simulations and rendering on the Dell anyway, just annoying when I'm working on the P4!

:bounce: DONOT COPY THE CACHE FILES TO THE OTHER MACHINE.INSTEAD RUN THE SIMULATION IN THE OTHER MACHINE ITSELF.IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS TRY INCREASING THE RESOLUTION OF THE CLOTH.

Recreating the cache on each computer is a horrible idea because the animation will look different on every computer. What's the point of having a cache in the first place if you have to do this?

Moving between 4.02 and 4.0 could very well be the problem. I would get both machines on the same version(4.02). There were probably some bug fixes dealing with this between, 4.0/4.01/4.02. They should have a list of everything that was updated/fixed in 4.01/4.02 in the release notes on your 4.02 box(online docs).

cheers beaker!

I'll try upgrading, pain in the arse that!

I think I'll be re-simulating on the Dells anyway: got some tweaking to do, and I may want to up the resolution of the cloth to get rid of those nasty shading artifacts where columns of faces are pointing in opposite directions. I'll definitely need the Dells to do that if I want the results before 2010!
