View Full Version : Boiling water [Max5]
mridgers 01-22-2003, 05:54 PM The problem of boiling water is coming up in the project that I am currently working on, yet I have no idea where to start. Anyone have any suggestions about how this could be approached, in particular the bubbles breaking on the surface? The budget doesn't stretch to plugin's, so it's free things or modifiers all the way folks :).

Hi,
Try using a spherical Displace Space Warp.
To illustrate what I mean, give this a try:
1.) Create a cylinder (this will be the surface of the water)
RADIUS: 200.0
HEIGHT: 10.0
HEIGHT SEG: 1
CAP SEG: 50
SIDES: 50
2.) Create a Displace Space Warp (this will be your bubble)
In the MAP group of the Parameters rollout, select spherical and set the length, width & height equal to 15.0
In the DISPLACEMENT group of the Parameters rollout, set the Strength equal to 28 and the Decay equal to 0.4
3.) Animate the spherical Displace Space Warp such that it passes through the cylinder quickly.
Now multiply the Space Warps and stagger them so that when you animate them it appears as bubble breaking the surface of you boiling water.
Supplement this with a noise modifier on the cylinder (water surface) to give the water surface some additional turbulence.
Also, create a particle system for smaller bubbles and set the life of the particles such that they die just as the emerge from the surface of the water.
Then its pretty much a matter of tweaking the parameters.
Hope this gives you a couple of ideas.

Very nice solution there. I tried it out just for kicks and giggles and it works exceptionally well. Thanks for that nice little tut.
