While this is a small part of my new project, it's an important one. This is my first time using the SSS skin shader. I think I have what I want, but it could always be better right? One thing that bothers me is that my bump map works quite well on anything facing the camera, but on areas that are perpendicular to the camera, it seems to fade. Is there anything I can do to fix that? And on the SSS shader, is there a displacement option? I can't locate it if there is.

Keep in mind that you won't see this pickled punk this close. It will also be immersed in liquid in a jar. But any comments or tips or crits would be appreciated.

Yes, I have a fascination for babies in jars, from pickled punks in old time carnies to medical specimens in museums. This is my fourth.

make sure you hav SSS fast skin material+displace. it is possible your window isn't extended to the right enough when selecting material type and you couldn't see displace.

as for the bumpmapping, your lighting looks like it is coming from the camera, have you placed lights that aren't by the camera? simple question not meaning to insult your intelligence, but its possible that is the problem - solved simply by moving lights.

Thanks, I didn't see displace. I'll have to look harder. I find I like just a little bit of displace in my stuff lately.

The lighting is just a simple omni so i could check spec and such while preparing the model and the jar and all. Once it's finished I'll build whatever models I need for the scene, or find what I need in my model bank, build the scene then merge the jar baby into it. Lighting will be whatever the scene lighting is, likely an omni and some spots, maybe an extra light just for the baby.

I have to say, though, I REALLY do not like Mental Ray's glass material.
