View Full Version : What do you use to render?
I'd particularly like to hear from Mac users. I'm trying a range of renderers at the moment, looking for one that's cheap and good quality while I save up for Lightwave! 3Delight is excellent but a nightmare to use at least until the Ribbit plugin is working. Art of Illusion looks promising and is a little easier (Well a lot easier actually!) but I'll probably end up using Bryce at least for a while. It's very easy to use and the quality is fine for my purposes, it's just so damn slow!
I'm green with envy looking at the simplest of renders from the likes of Lightwave, Cinema and Maya!

render 0_0 whats that? hehe no, I used 3dsmax but its not available on Mac  So I do suggest LW when you get the money. It has a very groovy looking render.

I have just got back from holidays and would like to say that I have a little time to work on Ribbit and the povray plugins... So there should be a release in the next few days.
I will also get the VRML_UV back and working which will also give you the option of working with blender or Strata....
As for what I use -- lately I have been using Realsoft3d to do my rendering
thedaemon, I've been playing with the Lightwave discovery edition and I do like it (hard work to learn though :o) It'll be a loooong time before I can afford the full version though :o(
KayosIII, that's great news! Hope you had a good holiday :o) It won't do me much good until I upgrade to OS10.2 though, I can't use the latest version of wings. I'm hoping to upgrade in the next few weeks so I'll look forward to all the new toys! I've never got anywhere with Ribbit (not a criticism, I appreciate your efforts!) So I'm not sure how it'll work, will you be able to apply shaders/textures within Wings, will there be some sort of preview? I'll probably be using it with 3Delight as there is a GUI available for it but generally renderman compliant renderers scare the bejesus out of me, I really don't understand the process.

ya!
i use lightwave. one thing you gotta be carefull of in LW though; LW's way of handling geometry is very different than Wings'. if you take a model into LW from Wings, no worries, it's gonna work super well.
but if you try to re-export your model to Wings via OBJ you may run into problems. Wings will sometimes interprit the object as a group composed of an object for every face in the model!!! whick completely **cks up your ability to use any of the edge functions in Wings.
blender works well, especially with the ever growing suite of export scripts!!!
so how well does metanurbs work with wings-created files? or is it better to do all your modeling in wings, smooth there and then import to lw for animation and rendering?

that's a good question.
i usually just hit F5 in wings,
selecting all my ngons, then right click>>>
tesselate>>>quads.
lightwave's metanurbs work flawlessly with the
geometry Wings' outputs. just make sure you
convert your ngons to tris or quads in Wings
cuz LW has a tendancy to biff up the geometry
otherwise.
cool, thanks for the info. i've heard some people mention that they model in wings but do tweaking in lw modeler before rendering, wasn't sure what the process would be there.

I render in XSI ,
Importing and smoothing the mesh works flawlessly in xsi. And mental ray 3.1 is amazing :D
I've been using max 5. only because i'm not familliar with any other software. it's working pretty good. it's alot better than previous versions of max. i can finally use GI yay ;)
any suggestions for a cheap simple way to render with similar features? coz i won't have access to max for too much longer
one thought might be the 3dtoolkit from DVgarage (http://www.dvgarage.com/). its bascially an older version of electric image for only $199, known to be a solid renderer. no GI or anything like that tho as it is a slightly older version.

blender --->export to YAFRAY
there's some awesome new tweeks in the current
"FUN" version. check it out:
http://projects.blender.org/viewcvs/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/blender/featurelist.txt?cvsroot=tuhopuu
you can download it here:
http://www.tncci.com/blender/funblender.zip
Strata --->pro version has IK/FK, photon rendering,
raytracing, GI, etc. sux for modeling though.

Cinema4D @ 500 bux!!! http://maxon.net
KayosIII thanks for the pointer to Realsoft, looks interesting and they're working on a Mac version!
NavelLint (Cool Name!) I didn't realise there could be a problem exporting from Lightwave to Wings, better than the other way round though! I've been using the discovery edition with Wings without problems but with fairly simple models. Have you tried running the model through UVMapper or something before importing to Wings? It'd be nice to find a workround!

yeah...i've tried all of these
apps to find a work around:
blender
cinema 4D
ultimate Unwrap3D
crossroads
amapi
vue d'esprit
nendo
anim8or
no luck so far.
Bjorng said that he was actually
aware of the problem...in older
versions of Wings it used to cause
the program to crash.

THe funny thing about wings is that alot of people will be rendering in thousand dollar programs that already have modelers LOL ;)

dude i know!
Wings is amazing!
i talked our ART Dept. into buying 3 copies of Lightwave in addition to our 2 copies of Maya, and, lol,
i pretty much only use Wings for modeling.
ah well.
:)
NavelLint, DAMN!:annoyed:
