Here is my entry. I decided to go very classical with the look of the ruins and to try to use as little photo elements as possible. There are a few- the bubbles and some gravel texture, but I'm trying to liberate myself from photo elements by restricting the use.
This is meant to look contrasty, and since it looks different on every monitor, that's hard to control, but on mine, it's dark.
I strayed from the assigment by adding some characters, but I was having too much fun, and they're on a seperate layer anyway.

great sketch, but it doesn't seem like photoreal matte to me.. you should probably use either photo textures on 3d models or directly photos to create your mattes, after you have solved your composition in a sketch...

Mattepainting is not allways photoreal, pal ) Thare are a lot of paintings, that based on photos but have a lot of overpainting so they are not 100% photorealVery interesting idea! I like it :thumbsup: Good luck )

the key is to have 1,2,3 read of photoreal areas. Rest could be silhouetted shapes that could be 100% painted lacking textures. But you DO need the photographic detail in some areas to sell the undetailed parts
