View Full Version : Repair/Recover HD??
Primitiv 08-03-2006, 10:52 PM I am having trouble with an external LaCie HD. It won't boot anymore. My trusty DiskWarrior seems not to be able to repair it. What would you recommend to repair HDs or recover data?
Thanks

Are you running OSX?
If so, if you just have jumped to 10.4.6 or .7, there is a known issue that external FW drives don't mount. The cure for that is is to turn everything off, unplugg the FW's. Restart, and reconnect the FW's after a few minutes, as to "re-set" them.
Second issue, that I've personaly have had with LaCie FW, is that it's the powersuppliers that's gone south, try a new/another powersupply.
Holding my thumbs for your HD it hhaven't been messed up by trying to repair it.

The drive was hooked on my G4 that runs OSX 10.3.9. I tried it on my G5 with 10.4.6 without success. Attempts to repair failed and I don't think it did anything to the HD. DiskWarrior also failed.
The HD failed after it was accidentally kick down by my young daughter. I checked it immediately after it happened and it was still running, but at the next restart of the computer it did not mount. I imagine the directory has been damaged and possibly the disk itself. I am sure that there must be a way to recuperate data from it. I just don't know how.

Hi Yves,
Try replacing the cable and try another FW port on the G4 ....
Might be defective prongs or cable ??????
Worse comes to worse, I've used ....
Drive Savers

My favorite solution is a 25 pound sledge hammer. expensive, but oh so satisfying.
and if you have unlimited funds, try DriveSavers. They charge as much as $2500.00 to extract data from all the platters. (they dismantle the drive in a clean-room, and put each platter in a special reading device). They can restore data from scorched, broken, scrached and otherwise mangled platters.

and another one;

then there's recovery software you can buy. some of these you can download and test first;

Could work. I am pulling my stuff using Data Rescue II right now and it seems to be working. It is not very fast though.
