View Full Version : how would i rig a bass drum pedal?

Hi guys,

i'm working on building a drumkit model (in 3d Max 7), and am starting to think about how to rig a bass drum pedal. Would i use bones for it or would there be a way to just link it somehow?

I've rigged some characters before but never done tools or machinery and that sort of thing.

Basically it works by pressing the pedal, which pulls a chain which rotates the axle. A spring attached pulls the pedal back up. A pedal pic HERE (http://forksdrumcloset.com/zc/images/5000AD3.gif) in case you don't know what i mean ..

any advice or suggestions on ways to approach this would be greatly appreciated. sorry if i've posted in the wrong section!

I would use a three (plus 2 nub end) standard bones - drawn in reverse order starting from the toe end of the floor (base) part to the heel end of the foot pedal (first joint) then the second bone up to the end of the foot pedal where one's toes would be. Stop there with a nub bone.
Finally draw the third bone starting from where the cusion pole starts (above the chain) to the end of the cusion pole.. The nub bone in this case would end up right on the drum cusion.

reverse order will ensure that the drum pedal's base stays flat on the ground.

link your pedal's parts (3 of them)... base/floor, the foot part and the 'cusion pole' to each bone.

wire the Y or Z angle (whichever one is bending towards and away from the base drum) of the first joint to a slider control or whatever ui you wish to use. This will create the 'attack' movement of the pedal. wire the same rotation on the third bone to the rotation on the second bone, adjust if needed by multiplying the rotation value by 0.8 or whatever works best.

perhaps insert a noise controller on the XYZ rotations of the third bone and turn it on/off whenever the drum is hit with the pedal (based on the furthest rotation of the first joint) although make the values for noise very small. This will create a slight vibration (if your camera is close in view to the object in time) to the 'cusion pole'. to make the effect greater, use a motion blur in your Enviornment/Effects.
