View Full Version : Animation General Question
dumitrug 08-03-2006, 02:08 PM Until a few months ago I used 3ds max for modeling and its biped animation system. Now I use maya for modeling exclusively - I love it, it’s a lot easier and intuitive IMO. And I would like to learn rigging and skinning. From your experience: which is better? Rigging in maya or max? Should I stick to max for rigging or learn how to rig in maya? I know maya helps me a lot for modeling, I wonder if the same thing can be said about its animation capabilities.
Thanks in advance.

Neither. They both do the same things I've found. Maya has no built in biped equivelant tho, or not that I know of. But if you're going off bone systems etc the same results are achievable in both I've found, it's just what you like to use more as the principles are the same. Just my 2 cents...

Thanks, Stewart. I’ll go with maya then as it became the main modeling software for me. Out of curiosity, what are you currently using?

Currently I'm using both. I find them very similar in most aspects, oh, and they both have their good points and bad points! :) (It's compulsory to moan about whichever one you are using at that very time! haha!)
Good luck with your learning, there's plenty of reference out there!
Cheers

I believe that 3dsmax has a richer scripting language (maxscript) versus Maya (mel).
I would guess that now these two apps are run by the same corporation, there may be stronger crossover features within the next round of versions to be issued by Autodesk.
If I was getting started with animation rigging, I would figure out how to script with both max and maya. I'm not a rigging pro - just a hobbiest so my words on learning both sets of scripting languages would be for interest sakes only.
Although, if I was the only one animating my scenes, then I would be creating the controls and code that is found within the applicaiton I use the most to animate, which in your case sounds like Maya.

Thanks, your answers are much appreciated. I learned maya’s modeling features from its documentation, so I guess I’ll use it for animation also, unless you know something better.
