i have a HD comp that is using a 12000x12000 PSD image and the render craps out.

the error msg says that AE cant buffer an image that big. what is the maximum image i can use then?

i am on a G5 QUAD, 4.5 GB of DDR SDRAM, rendering with Nucleo.

I don't know the maximum image buffer, but you can split your image in Photoshop and then in AE, link them together.

splitting the image would be a good idea. although, depending on what your final output is, i doubt that you would need a file that large. i usually notice AE becoming noticeably slow with images around 3500X3500 and up.

i would make a copy of that file in photoshop and reduce it to 6000x6000, and try that in AE. if it still gives you problems, shrink it too 4000x4000, etc.

also make sure that the file is set to 72dpi.

Well the quality of the machine hasn't got a whole lot to do with it, this issue is more to do with AE's internal buffer size. 12000x12000 is phenominally huge and exceeds all recommendations on file sizes. You can reduce the image size as mentioned above, or split the image (tile it) into 3000x3000 chunks, then reassemble in a subcomp.

Another thing you might try (although either way you MUST lose the 12000x12000 images) is to hold down the Shift key and select the Preferences menu. While still holding the Shift key down, in preferences, select the drop-down menu. You will see an option called Secret. Let go of your Shift key and select Secret.

A value of 1 will make AE purge memory every frame, so you can set this depending on how long AE lasts before crapping out. For example, setting it to purge every 10 frames or something. DON'T set this to 1 and just leave it there for good, there's a good reason for AE to use memory beyond one frame!

thanks for the feedback everyone.

i ended up reducing it to 8000x8000 and it renders now.

however, i looked up max image buffer in the help menu:

After Effects supports a maximum image resolution of 30,000 x 30,000 pixels for importing and rendering files, except for PICT (4,000 x 4,000 pixels), BMP (16,000 x 30,000 pixels), and PXR (30,000 x 16,000 pixels).

doesnt make sense to me. 12,000 is far less than 30,000.

anyhoo, thanks boyz!
