I'm messing with lights right now, trying to fale some radiosity using directional lights and duplicating them aroud the model!
The prob i get is that the shadows are blocky and rough... like a big pixel!
I'm adjusting the bias levels but i get no result so far... I know all this on my MAX days but now it's a whole new world!

Any helper around?

Go to Highend 3d and grab the GI Joe script. It works great on stills and with some tweaking works pretty decent on animation. It does what you are describing.

you could also try using arealights with raytrace shadows. sounds like your using Dmap shadows?

I've heard that on the Pixar films the lighting department spends a whole heap of time placing specifc lights individually to simulate real-world lighting setups.

I believe too that they place 'bounce' light under and object pointing up at it and then lightening and colouring the shadows to match the environment - and in general using 50-60 lights for a shot. Mind you rendering at feature film res can also take upto 40 hours per frame!

Another way to approach it might be to render the scene twice and put a lot of ray-traced reflectivity on the objects the second time round. Compositing the 'vanilla' flavoured render and blurred mirrored objects over the top will give you a global illumination effect for chosen objects.

So, yeah as well as the great GI script you might want to look into traditional ways of lighting your scenes...

Just some crazy mixedup thoughts.. :)
