View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - Rye
Ok i give up, I can't resist this one anymore.
During the time of the alliance between Men and Elves, Sauron enslaved 4 demons to guard the borders of Mordor. Stripped of their freewill, they were forced to wander the land in search of any unwelcome guests. The mere sight of them makes even the fiercest of ogres flee in terror. They have no known name, but most call them Monolich, because they are often travelling alone, and will take anyone down the path to their grave if they come too close.
I'll post a sketch in a few hours, just need to upload it when i get off work.

and a more detailed picture of the armor based on a paldron I found a pic of online, and i THINK on saurons gauntlets, but it might have been the ring wraiths. (can you tell i got lazy around the hand? :shame: )

Great concept RYE...can't wait to see ya kick some points around:D
Ok so i started working on it...at work :P but man armor is not easy at all. I just got a freelance job that should be done by Friday and I'll do as much with this as i can next weekend and maybe a little this week too :) I agree that the sword should be longer. I ran out of room on that paper, but in my MIND it was longer. ;) Thanks for encouraging me everyone, i was about to say "BAH forget it"
Trying to figure out this armor. I think im getting closer to having something that will work in 3d. Im not really sure what to do on the sides of the torso though.

nice concept sketches hmm the armor is not easy to model but thats why we are here :)
Whew finally started modeling. heres about an hour of modeling for the breast plate. I'm trying to get the mains hape down before i start adding the decorative plates.

Wow, those armour designs are incredible, Rye :applause:

hey rye,
I like the proportions of the Monolichs, good start on the armor to! maybe he will need a longer sword though, to be able to reach the small guys on the ground without geting a hunchback :)
take care

Good armor. But collar too high compare to chest area. But adjust later I know,it will be right.Nice.
just trying to extend the breast plate a bit to give him a longer look.
http://64.186.229.252/~ryana/art/cgchallengelotr/breastplate06.jpg
fellah: Sword will definitely be longer i ran out of room on that paper so i just gave him a "short" one...kinda like Totich :) But dude, a hunchback monolich would be hillarious! :D
janhath: I know people will disagree with me on this one, but I actually want the collar to cover most of his head. Have you ever seen Record of Lodoss War? The villians in that movie have HUGE collars and I've just always loved the way it looked. Once i finish the whole thing though I'll be able to tell better if it really is just way too high.

Great work Rye! The concept is good and your modeling is looking great so far. You should make them eyeless!! Wouldn't that be creepy! :buttrock:

It's looking awesome so far Rye!
Your concept sketches kick ass, and if you keep modeling like this, I'm sure the 3D version will be just as great.
Looking forward to more.
Keep it up!

thanks chad and DBZ : )
good idea about being eyeless...and if it looks good itll save me the trouble of modeling eyes! It depends on how much character eyes will add to it in the end.
heres a small update. just trying to add a few things to the breastplate.
http://64.186.229.252/~ryana/art/cgchallengelotr/breastplateviews.jpg
not much of an update...just added some shoulder blade cover thingies.

disclaimer  : This so called "texture" is NOT anywhere near final. I just threw it on there :)

cool! :buttrock: I like the concept a lot. There are so many big, fat, and/or ugly monsters in this challenge. Incredibly well done as some of them may be, they're just not my thing. So I'm going to keep my eye on this thread.

i would like to ask these questions:
1. what are you program are you using to model this
2. what is it being rendered in
3. what method of modelling are you using for this?
4. and would you mind if i used your design just to practise with? ( i wont post it as my own, nor will i use it for anything but practise)
its looking amazing so far :buttrock:

hey rye,
just want to say: KEEP THE COLLAR
its great: its ott sits perfectly with the rest of your design: the rest of the armour is all great looking but is not overly flamboyant...the big collar adds a touch of expresiveness to your design and looks fantastic.
keep it up - pardon the pun!
cheers!
Nice armour. I canīt wait to see it finished with a warrior inside.
This is going to be a very good thread i think.
Keep up.
Kogepan: This guy is really a big fat ugly moster in a skinny, lanky demon's body :)
Robo-obi:
1. 3dsmax5
2. 3dsmax5 scanline :)
3.I'm not sure what the name would be called. Basically I start with a plane, covert it to editable poly, then i extrude the edges to create the basic shape. From there I add a meshsmooth and tweak it a bit to get the look i want. Its the same method used for the famous Joan of Arc tutorial.
4.Sure go ahead! I have to say though that as I've been modeling I've seen that my concept is just that, a concept. It doesnt really work in 3d as its drawn and I've had to do a lot of adjustments, but I suppose thats part of the challenge :) I would recommend looking at pictures of real armor and having a go at those instead (maybe creating your own based on them like I did), but if you'd rather do this one, be my guest.
cakeypigdog: Hey thanks glad you like it! :D
Slot: Thanks bud, i cant wait to see it finished either!

Looking great
I really love the organic look of it :D
You should add a top rim section to the collar bit though - at the moment, the top edge looks a little plain.
