trainee 08-01-2006, 01:22 PM Hi everyone!
I have been reading your postings for while and finally decided to create my own anatomy thread and join the community here at CGTalk!
My name is Julian and started drawing about 5 years ago. I didn't really take it seriously enough at first but some time ago I decided to work harder and draw every day.
I have mainly been doing studies from photo ref but I have finally managed to enrol in a life drawing course at university. Can't wait until it begins! :bounce:
Enough said, here's some of my recent stuff...
I don't have a scanner so you have to live with digital photos! :D
Some gesture drawings:

Welcome! I'm new to these threads, too. There is so much inspiration and things to ponder in all of the threads. We're all at different levels and we all things to learn (I'll stop when I'm dead).
Good to see you here...great start....keep going.

trainee,
Welcome aboard! :) Just saw your post, as I have been going through to change the names of threads from "Anatomy Thread of *name*" to "Sketchbook Thread of *name*". I hope this is okay, if you prefer the former, just let me know, and I will change it back. :)
Nice to see your work! If you would like to tell us a bit more about your art training and background, that would be great. :)
Cheers,

@Cris:
Thank you! My also love this forum as source of inspiration. It's alsway great to see the work of so many talented people here. :)
@ Rebecca:
I'm perfectly fine with the new name.
With regard to arts I have no background or education (I'm studying Information Systems). I'm mainly learning from other people's posts.
I have read some books though:
- Betty Edwards: Drawing on the right side of the brain
The first book I have read to get me started. I really like this one.
- Loomis:
I sometimes use Loomis' books it as reference. Didn't read the text though :D
- Gottfired Bammes: Die Gestalt des Menschen
My anatomy reference guide.
What do you think of them?
Some more stuff:
I still have problems achieving a "natural look"

Some studies of Kevin Chen's drawings I did the last few days:
I wish he would write a book, I really love his drawings!

Come on, there must be something to say!
My Life Drawing Course started yesterday.
It's definitely harder to draw from life, but it's so much fun. Can't wait until next week.:bounce:
We did several 2 minute gesture sketches and one 10 minute drawing to get started.
Here is what it looks like:

Sorry for not posting for a while but Uni kept me busy. I wish I had more time to draw.
Here are three 20-minute drawings from drawing class and another Chen-study:

Hi, Julian.
Sometimes I have so much to do that I will come in and look at threads, but not have time to comment. I know that I enjoy having people comment...so I feel bad when I see someone ask for comments and not receive them.
I think naturalness comes from continuing to draw, from observaton and from confidence in your work which will come from your continuing to draw and observe. I still strive for it in my own work and I've been at it many years.
Your life drawing classes will become invaluable the more you learn. I know many of my friends and I sometimes still go out and hire a model just to draw from life again. At Disney, they would hire a model and we would do lunch drawing classes. We all know the benefit of observing the actual forms and especially if you can observe the person from different angles.
Your doing some very nice studies...keep up the good work.

Thanks for your comments :)
Naturalness is really not easy to achieve. Especially my faces often look unnatural. I think most of the time it is the perspective that I didn't capture well.
But since everybody is saying that it's all about practice I will keep on working on it until..., well unitl forever I guess
Cheers
Julian
PS: I forgot to mention that I will be on vacation for the next two weeks, but since I bought my very first Moleskine yesterday, I am well prepared and can draw lots of sleeping people in the bus :)

Hey Trainee,
Thanks for th comments. Looking at your work I'm not one to critique but it's really inspiring to look at someone who's better than I am looking at perspective. Great work!
Thanks,
Choco
