View Full Version : Egyptian girl, WIP need crit!
MikaelLeger 08-01-2006, 12:29 AM Hello,
I'm new here. Been looking around for some time. I thought that would be a good way to start.
This is a personal piece I'm working on. I was thinking about submitting it to the Exotic call for entry if it get finished on time.
Since I started without having the finish in mind. I am still unsure about the composition. The more I approach finish, the more uncertain I am about it. I'm also wondering on how it look on different screen. On one of my screen, the value are somewhat Ok but colors are a bit too saturated. But on my other screen colors are softer (maybe not strong enough) and the value look way to dull.
If you have any comment / critique, I'll love to heard it.
Thanks,

I love how this is shaping up! This is one of my favourite themes and you've painted it so well :)
I really like the cat, the pots at the corner add a nice touch too. I don't understand the shadow on her belly/hips though, if the light is coming from where I think it is.

woah this is very nice I'm subscribing :D
the only cEc I can give is that apparently there is a second light source which is probably inside the room but it looks too white to be light coming from candles or torches I mean don't think ancient Egyptians had neon lights :D

Wow, beautiful style and colors. I wish to be able visualize my own concepts In the same buildup/way like this one
Personally I think the Egyptian pillar is beautiful too but a bit distracting the focus from the main character.
Subscr..:)

Hi,
A little update. Thanks for the crits and comments.
Hiiri, For the belly one of my friend pointed out that she looked kind of preggy! I haven't had the chance to try to fix yet.
Teal-k, I see what you mean. Any advise on ow to fake torch/candle type of lighting?
Arty2, thanks. The Glyphs on the pillars are an important part of the picture ( at least for me). But I agree, they stand out a pit to much. I'll town them down at the end, when the rest of the picture is setup.
Notpill, Thanks.
Lots of cool guys from CA.org pointed to me that I needed to rethink the pose. Witch is mainly what I'm working on right now.
enjoy,

Honestly I didn't see much wrong with it in the first place but now it looks even better.
Great work so far.

hello mikun , if you wanna fake light candle its quite doable with photoshop or similar programs.
candle light give off a kind of yellowish light so what i'd do is this
create a new layer and fill it with a yellow gradient that goes from dark yello to lighter yellow then use multiply or try one if the other blending option to see what works best
there are other methods too but this looks like the easiest :)

Hello,
Finished? I don't know. Maybe not... I'm tempted to call it a quit and move on to something else.
Pap87, thanks.
Teat-k, thanks for the advice. I tried to color correct a bit. But I'm afraid I messed up more than anything...
Grrr, 4 in the morning... go to bed... think better tomorrow...

Hi mikun,
i've noticed that all the pillars are hi-detailed and very clean textured but the charachter it's brushy with speedy treatment. Actually i really like the kind of texture used on the girl (but its me).
I think the charachter deserve more details that background.
anyway it's really a good, good piece.
bye

Hey Notpill,
Sorry, I saw your post last night ( 4am) but was to sleepy to answer.
I agree! Lots of people pointed it out...I like to use a painterly approach on things. But for it to work I really need to know where I am going. Witch wasn't the case with the background... So I went for a more tedious approach. But, The two doesn't quite blend together... I'll try to loosen the background and refine the figure...
Since this is a WIP thread... hop hop hop! A little animated GIF I did for the French Forum Café salé...
cheers,

( you should be able to pose the GIF by "click and hold" on the scrolling bar. At least that's how I do in safari.)

In post 7 she is facing to the right and in post 10 she is facing to the left. I find this last picture chocking in my brain. I don't feel comfortable looking at the last one. I find very comfortable with the first one. I wonder if it is because we write from left ro right, and wonder if anyone here with a culture writing from right to left feels like me, contrary to me or the two are the same feeling into his brain. I really wonder about this.
The light is not correct in the pilar. You can see in something like the pillar shape (the belly) the correct placin of the shadows.
Also the pilar has sharps draws and the figure has blurred draws so it is no uniform. A better shadow in all the image and uniform the blur in all the image.
I really love this picture (the facing to the right). The cat I would try in a dark and bright rock I don't remember the name now you can see very much status medium sized in this material in the museum of Cairo.
I was feeling the figure was starting of ending a move and it was in my mind we will need a second picture because this one no tells the story. But then you lift her right leg and even some inch above the ground and facing down and now all the body is perfectly balanced I think. It is looking masterpiece if you fix the shadows and blur.
The "safari" gifs in my browser plays all the pics in less of a second, so It is some messing
in my brain...:) I can't open the gif in Photopaint nor Photoshop also, it gives error in both.
But when the images were loading in my Firefox browser I could see them to slower speed
and my favorite setup was one where she looks like acting on a scenario. Behind a cloth
and we can't see the pillar, I would put some very light transparency so you can intuite the pillar something like transparency in 7 (from 0 to 100) perhaps.
I also think she is looking to the floor, a pillar or so, with a lost looking. It would be always better give the spectator some material clues to figure out what is she viewing. Imagine she smiles with a smile with his face facin in a direction but her eyes focusing in a point you can identify as above ground where a man has the head. So you can tell a story with some gestual, not only looking to the infinity. In this case perhaps trying turning the eyes to the moon or the opposite direction, not in the direction her face is facing.
