View Full Version : persp view is broken after hitting 'F'

HelloEverybody,

I probably should know this by now, but:

Why is it that sometimes when I hit 'F' to focus on an object the persp view stops showing anything at all?

I try to focus on another object and to display all by hitting 'A' but I can't get the persp view back.

I really could use a good explanation about this one. I'm guessing that it's something very obvious about camera settings that I am missing.

thanks

If you hit the "[" key, it should pop you back to the previous view.

This has happened to me under a number of conditions. Usually it's one of two things.

This happens to me when the objects in the scene are so far apart that framing them with F causes the objects to be farther than the far clipping plane.

Also, sometimes the camera may be placed far enough away that the objects are very small.

As the previous poster said, use [ to get back where you were. Sometimes I find myself using the xform command to find the world space location of an object I want to see and just typing the position into the camera tx, ty, and tz.

Actually I've tried that before, which brings up another question:
the '[' key only seems to cycle through the previous 2 or 3 camera views. right?

When ever I loose the persp view the [ key dosen't work because I will have moved the camera several times so that hitting '[' doesn't go far back enough to bring me to the camera view that I want.

if its not the clipping plane thing, maybe it helps to do a camera reset (view > default home) and to try focusing again.

just a thought ...

there is a control on how many un/re-dos ([,]) you,ve got in your 'camera journal', ..in pannel editor, history, and whether it wraps, etc. another reason for camera blowing out may be the your shape and transform wrld locs are way off, in which case youi prolly want to step down to shape and foc on that.

I had something weird like this happen today, when I hit 'f' to frame the view, it jumped to a weird position and then locked up! Maya hadn't crashed, the persp view just refused to move/rotate, I could still select things in it, just not change the view! Weird!

Another option would be to set a key on the camera when you get a view you want to save. No matter what happens, as long as the key stays put, you should be able to revert to that view.
