Hi,

This is a short film that I created at Sheridan College in the Digital Character Animation course. Its a simple story, a chase scene between and boy and a robot. I compeleted it in April 2006 and decided to share it with all of you. I'd love to hear some constructive criticism. Thanks for taking a look.

Some nice animation there, I really enjoyed it.

Liked the lights in the factory, especially when he first enters. Maybe due to compression, although the blacks feel a bit grey.

A few little things;

-The guys head as he moves backwards away from the Robot, it is a bit wobbly, is that intentional? Part of the character?

-The run away from the camera, could feel a little faster, although again that could be to do with camera angle making it harder to gauge the speed.

-The Robot could make the bar seem heavier when he catches it, so he turns slightly and shows more secondary and gives the impression the bar has been thrown with more force, although he is a robot - so that could be dependant on what kind of robot.

-When the Robot is destroyed, the fall feels a bit light, maybe the fall could be quicker and have a bit of a shake when it hits the floor to emphasize its bulk.

Seeing as your focus was on animation, my points are mainly geared towards that. Your modeling is good though, did you movie turn out the way you wanted it to?

Made good use of your time at Sheridan!
Congratulations on a great short!

Cute little short you have there!!!
You have some nice shots, cool posing, for some reason some parts made me think about "war of the worlds", that was cool.

I think there are some animation problems, timing wise and another thing is the flow of motion, at times it felt like the motion is not clean especialy at the action sequence, after the first run when he jumps and hangs and showing us his athletic capabilities.

Anyway, good job, I enjoyed it!

Hello Arbi,

On top of what Minximation & Ranimate have said, I think the climb that he did had a bit too much overlap... a bit "rubber hose" like. The head wobble which Minximation was stating... I think you had too much anticipation and drag which made it look like a wobble. This is just what I think and I might be wrong though.

Nice short... keep up with the good work!

Hey there, regarding what Peter said, I wasn't sure if we were talking about the same place, as I'm not sure there's a lot of anticipation and drag in that affecting the head. Its when he's on the balcony section and the robot comes up and he starts backing away and that's the head bit there...right there! ;) If thats the bit Peter, then sorry to reiterate.

Personally, I like the climb, although I can see what Peter is saying, everyone animates differently though and all feedback is useful in working out how to go about approaching and developing animation.

Ciao

Thanks for crits from everyone!!
In this short, i wasnt trying to go totally realistic with the animation, i was trying to give it a more cartoony/stylized feel to it, so some parts my seem more realistic in terms of animation then others.

-with the backwards walk, i do agree that the head looks wobbly, and if i had more time i would go back and fix it. i still cringe every time i see it :)

- i tried to speed up the second run a bit, but with the amount of space he had to run and the amount of screen time i wanted for the character it just wouldnt fit, so i had to slow him down a bit.

- i see what you mean by the robot seeming light when it gets destroyed, something i never really noticed before, but it clear to me now, thanks

-for the climb section, i was trying to get a really fluid looking action and make it seem effortless for the character and i may have put too much overlap which gives it a rubber hose look. It probably stands out more because its not consistant with the animation before it.

Thanks again for the crits!! they are much appreciated, keep them comming :)

Nice short. I like that it drops us right in the middle of the action. Overall the quality is good, I especially like the lighting/shadowing and atmosphere inside the factory. The animation does have the cartoony/stylized feel you were aiming for, so criticizing it on those grounds isn't necessary. Out of curiosity, what program(s) did you use and how long did it take?

Thanks burdennwoe,

i used Maya 7, Photoshop, After Effects. I took about 4 months to complete.

Hey Arbs,

Be great if you could break down those 4 months. From start to completion right?
How long did it take for you to model and texture your set?
Build, rig, texture your character?
Lighting and rendering?
How long did you spend animating?

If you'd had more time, is there anything that you'd have changed?
Did you come across any big problems during production?

muchos gracias chicos

hi minximation,

The enitre process of creating this short was not done step by step, as in, i didnt model, then rig, then texture, then animate. Everything was done gradually until it all came together in the final couple of weeks. So i basically starting modeling a basic character and started setting up a basic rig so that i could start animating right away. Then i would take a break from animating and maybe model more stuff on my set, continue modeling the characters, add textures, add more stuff to the rig, then go back to animating. So its hard to say exactly how much time i spent doing every single thing, it was all a gradual thing. The way my rig was set up made it very easy to go back and change things to the rig or the character without losing animation. After all the animation was "done" (or i was happy with it) i began lighting and rendering, and thank god for the render farm at our school, becuase otherwise it would not have been completed in time. It took about 3 weeks for lighting and rendering, i used a mix of mental ray and software render. But if i had to total it up, i guess i spent about a month and a half modeling and rigging the characters, about 3 weeks modeling and texturing the set, about 2 and a half months animating, and 3 weeks for lighting and rendering, and a couple weeks for post. I think thats everything :)
