View Full Version : Low-Poly Mech (yeah, another one)
Wintermute 01-21-2003, 08:55 PM I'm in the process of building a low-poly battlemech for possible game use.

This is the 1st time I've tried to build something with an intentionally low poly count.

Looks good so far! Warhawk is one of my favorite Clan mechs, so I can't wait to see it finished.

finished modeling it for now, I beat my target of 2000 polys by quite a bit.
Warhawk (Masakari) full mech: 1484 Polygons

and some wires of the legs...

By far, the fastest I've ever modeled anything this complex. now I need to texture it.

Sweat model, I mean like for 1,5k faces it's very very nice. I have one question. When you create a low poly model for a game like a mesh or sumthing like that, do you have to create one solid objects? or is there a posdsibility to model separate parts, like a mech with 20 meshes or so, and then connect it [btw how can I connect separate meshes with relative ease and efficiency?] Once again, great model. thanks crash!
This is the first time I've ever done anything for a game... (plus I haven't goten a look at the sdk requirements) so I don't know about multiple meshes combining to one object, this particular mech is made of 22 separate parts, (meshes) all to animate the necessary articulation for walk cycles etc...
I'm basically using this project to learn how to maximize polygon effeciency (which I seem to have accomplished), as well as teaching myself how to apply UV maps, which I must say, seem to be slipping away from me every time I get close. :surprised
as far as combining meshes....I generally just push some verticies around untill the geometry is where I want it...there are other methods of course

It's taken me a while to wrap my head around uv mapping, but I think I'm on the right track here.
here's a little update:

Lots to do still...
(The whole torso is in one 1024x1024 map)

Granted this is the first time I've ever uv mapped *anything*, I think it's going well.

Hey Wintermute comming along very nicelly, is there a possibility you could slap some dsirt on the texture? Now it's a bit clean. Otherwise very nice. KU. Greetz

I finally have some semblance of textures for my Warhawk torso!!
Granted, there are still a few places that need to be touched up, but I could really use some crits on these!

Good work man!!
I like that low poly:thumbsup:
Texture is similar to cartoonish style... it was intentioned?
If no I think that you should make more darker colours, and that pattern should have more density...
But its only my modest opinion;)
Generally model looks great:thumbsup:

I've adjusted the colors of the camo to something a bit less cartoonish, although I'm not planning on adjusting the pattern density.

presently I'm manually unfolding the rest of the mech into another uvmap :surprised ..keep an eye out for updates
