digital_rhino 01-21-2003, 08:42 PM I am a Maya instructor down in FL, and I need to figure out which new books to use for our classes next quarter. If anyone has looked through the newest books, please give me your opinion of them. Also....we may be looking very soon for another maya instructor. So if anyone is near Tampa, FL and interested, let me know.

Not sure as far as the books...
but I live near Tampa, and would be a good instructor.
I only have an A.S.
Does the position require a BFA?

What school are you refering to, Academy of Design?
Out of all the books, I prefer Maya's documentation. Maya Complete series and Maya 2: Character Animation are all decent books for students.

Thanks Guys, for the imput.
joe - i'll have to ask my boss, but i believe they will require a
bachelors.
ryan - the books you speak of atre indeed good, but a bit
outdated. Theres been too much added to maya, to keep
working with them.
jack - thanks for the imput. I have had an oportunity to look at those books. They look real good, but are they maya specific?
has anyone had a chance to look at:
Maya Character Animation -- by Jaejin Choi
Maya 4.5 Fundamentals -- by Jim Lammers, Lee Gooding
Maya 4.5 Savvy by John Kundert-Gibbs
Exploring Maya 4: 30 Studies in 3D by Maximilian Schoenherr
The Maya 4.5 Handbook (with CD-ROM) by Adam Watkins
Maya Visual QuickStart Guide by Danny Riddell.
these plus others are on amazon...i just dont know which ones are good.

I just got "Maya Character Animation" haven't had a chance to go through it, but from a brief page through it looks like it holds promise. He has a ton of pictures and diagrams, I like the books layout, easy to follow, all color pictures, I think it will become my new Maya Bible ;)
I had Maya 4 Fundimentals, but not the 4.5 version. It was an okay starting point, but didn't go into too much depth on anything. Kind of an icebreaker I guess.
The visual quickstart guide for maya was good, it was basically a slightly more detailed version of the Instant Maya manuals, but nothing more.

the inspired 3d books are maya based books but they can also be used for general use!
by the way most of the other books you mentioned like:
The Maya 4.5 Handbook (with CD-ROM) by Adam Watkins
Maya Visual QuickStart Guide by Danny Riddell.
etc...
are to me very basic!!! Its not bad for beginers but even then!!!
and I also heard (did not read it myself) that the "Maya Character Animation" is a good book. But, it is a book that is based mostly on animation!!!
It depends what you are teaching. Is it an introductory course? Having thaught a concentrated animation class as well as an introductory level class, I found that beginers want alot of documenteries and tutorials and intermediate student want less tutorials and more 'tricks'...that could influence your choice of book!

I believe Maya 4.5 Savvy is the follow up to Mastering Maya 3, which was a very in-depth Maya book. Great if you're looking for a book that doesn't coddle beginners.

well the books are for a modeling class, and for an animation class, so I'll check out Savvy. I'll also take another look at the books you recomended jackk. I apreciate your input...thanks guys.
If anyone else has a favorite, let me know. We have some time before next quarter, so i'd like as much input as possible. Thanks
Am Exploring Maya 4.0 is quite good for newbies wanting to do tutorials.

Anyone knowing when 'advanced' books will be published ??
As most of them are mostly beginner/intermediate level right now....
i bought maya 4 fundamentals, learning maya, maya secret of the pro's, and some other books about 3d.
They do offer some insights on the program, but when will there be hardcore advanced books ? :)
will there ever be ?

Chappo, Mastering Maya 3 / Maya 4.5 Savvy may be the kind of book that you're looking for.
More and more I'm hating the Inspired 3D books. For $60 not only do you not get a CD, but it's poorly bound as well. So far I've been lucky, but other classmates' books are losing pages by the fistful. Rediculous.

i have to agree with Wigaru Wiyamoto about the cheap binding for the inspire books. my books are totaly falling apart!!!
and chappo if you're interested in more advance books you should check out the book called 'The complete Maya programming' as well as 'MEL scripting for the animators'
there mostly based on the power of srcipting for the software
