every camera is differnt, you need one with a large mega pixel...3 or higher is really really nice.
And something with a macro mode that lets you get closer than the normal run of the mill cameras out there.

Go check out your local camera stores, test the cameras and see four yourself.

I find my Canon A40 just fine...it's only 2 mega pixel, but i usually end up altering my textures in photoshop.

1 megapixels are cheap, 2 is standard, 3 and up are the best.

I would also check out about the "shutterspeed" I guess they would call it. some are slow, and you move, and blur the pic.

macro is a good idea, Ive also got blurred photos when I try to take ref pics, can't get close. good call

I'd probavbly go for a Nikon Coolpix 990 / 995, they have the shortest macro distance as far as I know, only 2cm (0.8 inch), for further information you can check

I have the nikon coolpix 990, the only thing I do not like about it is its consumption of batteries. I finally switched over to rechargbale batteries and am completely happy with the images i get from the camera

I have a Canon Digital Ixus V2 (2 megapixel)

Im extremely satisfied with it:

Its small (so you can take it everywhere(
You can connect it to your television
Macrofunction (10 / 57 cm)
manual shutterspeed

I went for the Nikon 990, too. After checking the various cameras out there I considered it to be the most acurate in capturing colour.

Other brands tend to oversaturate one of the main colours.

A good source for camera info is www.dpreview.com .www.dpreview.com (http://www.dpreview.com)

There you will not only find in depth reviews, but example picture galleries for many cameras, and forums so you can check out what users of a specific camera think about them.

If you can afford it, go for a SLR digicam or at least something that accepts other than standard optics. I at least like to minimize distortion through using a long lens.

knowing the budget would help a lot :)

if budget is not an issue i can only reccomend the minolta 7 serie for texturing work.
there are several versions: plain, i and Hi released at different dates.
If you can afford it the Hi (about 1200$ according to DPreview, but i paid mine 950 Euros) is way better then the i version for build quality etc.

altho the compression and the colors are not the best (i tend to mostly use raws anyway) the macro is impressive, the optics are excellent and the defects are almost negligeable for texture work (it's a tiny bit slow compared to nikon or sony offers, but that mostly matters in other kind of photography).

for a REALLY good comparison and list of cameras www.dpreview.com
they are not heavily sponsorized and i almost always found their judgment very close to the reality of facts.
they also allow for consumers' comments without censorship, that always helps when looking for an opinion about something :)

Edit: btw it's 5 effective megapixels, that also makes it excellent for taking shots to use in matte painting, i find the 3 megapixels barrier untolerable for anything but contributions shootnig

Foveon (http://www.foveon.com/) invented an entirely new technology for sensors that avoids chromatic abbreviations and delivers images of same quality as the most high-end cameras at a fraction of the price.
Available now is only the Sigma SD9 (list $1.800, street $1.500, I heard) but they annouced that this year they gonna release new products in the consumer-level price segment, at about $500.

If that happens, I'll buy my next digicam -- it will beat anything you can expect from the competition for some time.
Foveons only problem is that no one knows them. If they can't get more attention for their patented technology, they may just disappear like others before ...
