Cris-Palomino 11-17-2006, 08:35 PM Hey, guys. Thanks, Glenn...yeah, kinda looks like Legend...but then Legend has done that to almost any horned figure now, eh?
Hi, George...thanks.
Mark...thank you for the nice comments...thanks so much for the stars...:blush::blush:
Thank you, Gislaine-of-the-beautiful-name. Glad you like it.
Thanks, Isaias...you'll be seeing more of these types from me, I think, as I'm starting the Creature class with Don Seegmiller.

Hi Cris,
Great stuff! Nice expressive work. Another inspiration for me:thumbsup: on the Painter work. You're right. Can't stop cruising the forums for artists work I haven't seen and for great lessons from those I know. I sniffled at the end of Eight Below. The loyalty and the spirit that allows a critter to endure so much is amazing and heartbreaking. Just saw Lost City with Andy Garcia.....excellent film. Got a real real feel for the era of Bautista and Castro. It left me thinking alot.
But, what I really want to say is I like the brush textures on the eye. Niiice. feels so soft, like hummingbird feathers. Must dive into Painter and ArtRage soon.

Awww, thanks, AztecFireFlower. Yeah, I saw that Andy Garcia film. Did you see The Motorcycle Diaries? That is one that really got to me. I had not known that part of Che Guevara's life...the things that lead us to what we do. Really a great film.
These brushes are really fun to do. The results can be so unexpected If you would like to learn more about making them, let me know...it's a similar process to making Photoshop brushes as these are captured dabs. These are a few more:

Creating Captured Dab Brushes in Painter for Concepts and Painting
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/Dab.jpg
This is a short tutorial on creating brushes similar to those used in Photoshop, but made for use in Painter IX/IX.5. They work very similar, but used in conjunction with the painterly brushes normally found in Painter, can yield some great effects.
I am fond of the organic feel I get if I draw my dabs rather than use photographic sources directly (if you do use photo sources, it's copyright-safe to use your own photos). I suggest you cultivate a large stock of reference from wonderful places such as PBase (http://www.pbase.com).
This is just one example of how to do this and hopefully you can extrapolate from this method.
1. Observation. Find a photo with an interesting shape to duplicate. You may want to use it for an image similar to the photo or a creative use of it for foliage, skin, architectural textures...any number of things.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/Observation.jpg
I like to use a soft pencil to draw my shape. This is from some kind of sea sponge. I really loved the shape of the holes in this. Most brushes I draw are done on a 256x256 canvas. Dabs can only be captured from the canvas.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/Dab.jpg
2. Use whatever you want to draw the shape. These are my pencil settings I like to use. I vary the size and the opacity. Most brushes I draw are in grayscale. Color will appear first and deepest in the darkest areas.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/PencilSettings.jpg
Cris-Palomino

3. To create a brush, and preserve your original presets, you want to save a variant of a brush. I have brushes I have created for which I like the settings. A bit of randomization, a bit of opacity, size and angle variation. So I will save a variant from one of these. These are my favorite base settings.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/FavoriteStartSettings.jpg
4. Save the variant with a unique name different from the "donor".
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/SaveVariant.jpg
5. Select that donor.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/SelectDonor.jpg
Make sure you square marquee around the brush.
6. With the donor selected, use the fly-out menu from the Brush Selector to Capture Dab. (If it is greyed out, try marquee'ing around the brush again.)
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/CaptureDab.jpg
Cris-Palomino
11-18-2006, 06:05 AM
7. To apply the dab, you need to resave the variant. Make sure the name matches the new name you gave the brush. It will ask if you want to replace it, say yes.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/SaveNewVariantDab.jpg
You will now see the dab show next to the variant name in the brush selector.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/NewBrush.jpg
8. Test the brush.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/Test01.jpg
In this case, I wanted more space between the dabs and less jitter, so I adjusted the Spacing and Random controls.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/Test02.jpg
I adjusted once more and liked the settings, so I resaved again to save the settings.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/Perfect.jpg
Cris-Palomino
11-18-2006, 06:06 AM
9. I played with the settings, made them closer to make a larger hole.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/MultiUse01.jpg
And then made the brush much smaller to add some light colored ridges.
http://www.elektralusion.com/illo/BrushCreation/MultiUse02.jpg
The key is to be imaginative and use your powers of observation. This could be used for scarification and design. It could be an eye shape. Who knows...it's all up to you.

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial and found it useful.

Heya Cris,
I think the best is to repost it. If you don't mind, please title your Tutorial thread:
TUTORIAL - *What it's about* - by your name (minus the asterisks, of course) ;)
If you plan on doing a series of these, then you might want to title it:
TUTORIALS - *What it's about* - by your name
Mention somewhere that you will be updating the thread so that people can subscribe for updates. Once you're done, I'll send out the alert via the Notification thread. :)
Thanks a lot!

awesome brushwork Cris. i was killing myself over what kindof of primate that could be, it looks very realistic in a painterly way(if that makes sense:) ) did you use reference for that?
thanks for sharing sth. from a workshop with an obviously cool subject. that pic reminds me i need to work on eyes in general....
well done!

Thanks, Jan. This has definitely been more fun than you can have and stay legal. ;) There are such great artists in the class...should be a really good kick in the pants to work through this class.
We only have the eyes (ref given to us) so not sure exactly what kind of monkey. Don't even ask me what this is...was thinking maybe a hippo.

again, great studies on the eyes. amazing to see how many different, very distinct and characteristic eyes good old nature has come up with, and how little we need to see to be able recognize to what it belongs. (the good quality of your paitnings certainly helps too ;) )
good stuff!

I second the second. His eye looks inverted though. The first one is a bit cluttered and too close to the center composistionally. I would move him over a bit to the left and repose him a bit. Maybe move the front most arm toward the right more. I really like his face though.

Great work on this lil guy :) The only thing I thought was kind of "off" is that his eyes seem a bit too 'clean' compared to the rest of the image..but it may be me lol.
The first 2 creatures turned out nicely as well, but I have to agree with Womball that the first one does seem a bit centered.
This really must be a great workshop. The pieces Redehlert posted, your pieces, Cris, blows me away. Although I'd go for a lot more fierce look, I like this last guy, looks sweet :D The legs turned inside make him look more like that, but I think they're turned inside a bit too much.
His eyes stand out very well, those practises must have helped a lot, they are surely paying off.
Will wait for updates! Creatures = good :bounce:

hi,
the eyes work really well in this image and are the main attraction, for me at least. So, you seem to have gotten really something out of the workshop!
Are you going to add/overlay some nice textures over that skin?

Thank you, Gislaine, Abyss, and Mu. Mu, over the coming weeks, Don's class is supposed to go over techniques for painting scales and other things. So I am waiting on some of those before I decide what to do on some of these creatures. The class is really a lot of fun and you should see what some of the other students are doing. Thankfully, redehlert and RebeccaK have posted some of their work as well. You should check out their threads as well.
Thanks for checking out mine. :)
