After the 50 heads challenge i start my own thread here. I've been doing some other anatomy stuff so might as well post it here.
A bit about myself: i've been doing some 3D the last five years, but i lacked the anatomical knowledge. So i found Loomis on the internet and some forums and now i'm deeper in drawing than i had anticipated.
The main idea remains to develop my drawing skills to boost my 3D design capacities. I'm mainly interested in the design of smaller objects like mp3-players or cellular phones - just to give you a rough idea.
All comments, critiques, observations etc are welcome.

I start off with the heads i did for the challenge.

batte812,

Welcome aboard! :) Great to have your participation in the 50 Portraits Workshop, and I look forward to seeing you participate in more Workshops / Tutorials here on the Anatomy Forum! :)

I think that you are showing a good sense of the overall form of the heads which you have done for the Workshop. What might be nice to see next is a more detailed, careful exploration of a single Portrait where you first lightly block in the basic forms with a sharp and relatively soft pencil, and then really carefully detail with consistent shading the forms of the head.

Definitely check out this thread for inspiration:

Anatomy Thread of Kalene (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=385620)

And also look at artists such as Ingres (http://www.cameralucida.org.uk/images/large/knowledge/Ingres2.gif) to see examples of how great traditional shading is done.

I think that really exploring detail in this way will be a great next step in terms of really forming an understanding of anatomy in an in depth way.

Cheers, :)

great hand studies.
they're on my to do list... hands

batte812

Thanks for the reactions!

Fl3wk: indeed the skull is a bit blurry - i still need to practice my painting a lot. I'm gonna check out a few tutorials when i have the time.
Hi Johan; thanks - hands are a discipline oof their own - you should practice thel very regularly.

Rebecca: thanks for the welcome. I really hope to participate in this forum in other workshops, and by helping out other students.
Indeed shading is my weekest point, and i 'm working on it. I try to work with four levels and draw the areas , and then refining some, following the contours. Still al long way to go. I'll check out those links and i'll do some more reading on the subject
Here are some more drawings i did in the past few weeks:

Its relatively easy to make it more focused. Just make sharper edges, darker darks, lighter lights, more concentrated midtones.

Rebecca, i took up your advice to work on my shading; here are the first results

wow the female head is nicely shaded. Good progress.
Have you tried shading by keeping your pencil flat and using blending sticks?
If you want real smooth shading, try it. Takes a long time but the end result is very realistic.

batte812
08-08-2006, 12:16 PM
Hi Johan, yes i am trying this blending technique. It seems to work really well to spread out those darker areas from a B4 pencil more evenly. So the textue of the paper is not showing so much. I don't have any blending sticks, so for now i'm using pieces of paper, ear cutton buds, an old eraser, anything that does the job. Some more results:

I see you're getting the hang of it, nice studies here!
I like the skull where you've managed to give it a nice texture.

Those blending sticks, you can find them in any decent art store and they are really cheap. I think I paid 70€cents in total for 4 blending sticks in different sizes.

you can also try making them yourself with a piece of paper but it's not that easy (I gave up trying)

batte812

batte812,

It's been good to see your progress here. With respect to shading, I would recommend doing a small still life where you shade very carefully - check out the basic shading principles here, and perhaps shade an organic object such as an apple or a piece of wrinkled cloth for something more complex:

TUTORIAL SUMMARY - Anatomy Review 003 Shading Tutorial - Tutorial Material Only (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=351832)

Looking forward to seeing more of your work. :)

Cheers,

Hi Talaria, Thanks for the nice comments.

Hi Rebecca, nice to hear from you. Indeed i still need some more basic practice for my shading. I try more exercises later on.

Here are the latest renderings of my 3D modell for the torso. I have some sort of wire frames and some render experiments to imitate the pencil shading technique. The modell was made with 3D Studio Max and rendered with Mental Ray (the render engine of 3D Studio).

I still have a lot of work to finish the back. After that i might export the modell to Zbrush and add some more detail.

Hey wow compared to the pencil drawing, your pen work really pops out.
I think it's due to the higher contrast... really nice
more more more :)

batte812
10-08-2006, 02:55 PM
Thanks Johan. The higher contrast might have something to do with it. But i think it's mostly becaus i think more befor i draw, using a pen. With a pencil i tend to scribble away, and end up with a messy drawing...

I have been doing some basic perspective work, following the videos of Scott Robertson. It should lead into car designing one day.

So i just did a few little drawings and some head studies after Bammes as far as anatomy is concerned.

Hey man,

love the car sketches

edit: just noticed the front wheel(s) of the first one are too small but maybe it was intentional...

those basic exercises are the fuel for that kind of work, any kind of drawing actually (and arm, a finger, a leg can be simplified into a group of cylinders...)
I'm doing those as well at school since a couple of months and I love it (although I seem to be the only one in my class getting excited over drawing vases, winebottles and boxes  )

So there's no way I can convince you to join the peugeot challenge huh (big money prizes to win for the top 30 finalists!! ) :D

Hi Johan, it is a bit late to enter that competition. They're expecting the entries by now, and i still have to start designing... And as you can see, there are still a lot of issues with my cars (front wheels that are to small etc.).

I found the patience to do some more hatching exercises. Everithing done in ball point, so no room for corrections...

Let me just say that words of encouragement from others have really made me want to do more and post more. THat is just what I have been doing. So I am going to encourage you to keep working and post more and more. Pick a workshop and contribute. That will give you focus to a goal and make you want to work on more areas. Your doing great with your sketches.

Hi Aggie, thanks for the encouragement. Needed that. I'm gonaa contribute to the current workshop. Some really nice material to work from.

I did some more figure studies. I tried to draw them bigger and add in a bit more detail.

Some pencil sketches that went through Photoshop, and i started up Painter again. I don't know why i didn't do these exercises befor.

Hi bartovan, a really busy thread you have here, which is always good to see. The car sketches are really impressive, mostly cause I can't draw mechanical things for beans! Your hatching is coming along really nicely... and I admire your guts for working in ink (have yet to try that myself as I'm too chicken and love my eraser!). With the line drawings one thing I notice is you seem to be making longer lines out of smaller hatching strokes. You may find if you loosen up, maybe try drawing on a larger scale and just make solid flowing lines you'll get smoother results. Just a suggestion mind, these are all good in their own right! Lovely to see someone working at the basics too, you can guarantee when you move onto things like the car sketches they will look fantastic!

Wow!! A very impressive thread of work! I love your quick character sketches. I think they're really quite strong and they have a dynamic flow to them. Really good work there. Your faces and heads are very cool too.

Anyway, great work!

DMNY, hands are very difficult. You have to study the structure and you have to develop a good sence of perspective. Good luck.
Amerasu, i sometimes draw some figures completely in ink. It helps me to think more before i draw. I do the crosshatching at the end, so i get more consistency.

Zephyri
02-12-2007, 05:53 AM
Hey again! good to see you're still at it. The painter work you've posted is looking very good, the medium seems to suit you! Really like the first ones on this page you posted, where the figures are coming out of the black. The hands is nicely done too.

With the charcoal studies, have you tried shading the figure in without the linework? The thing that stands out most to me is some of the drawings have quite heavy outlines, that, perhaps without them the rest of the values that describe shaped would be lost. Focusing on dark edges against light, as you'v done much more in the painter pieces, might help bring another level of realism to the traditional studies.

but keep it up, there's definite signs of improvement.

Hi you all, thanks for the replies!

Samanthie: thanks
Roja: thanks, my hatchwork seems to go well when i work in ink, but i usually don't have the patience...
Zephyri: i'm stillm unsure about the forms, that's why i go over my lines again and again. Maybe i should do the outlines with a pencil first. My goal is not realism, however; i want to develop a stronger linework.

Here are a few very loose figure drawings:

Painter rules, eh? :D I would leave fast studies like these in a painterly style, I mean, no blending, except the stuff that gets blended with the same painting brush using pressure for opacity, you know. That, of course, might only be my preference. But it is good, because that way you'll be pushing your brushworking skills up up up, not blending out all the beautifull work you do. See my portfolio if interested how I leave those quickies pretty painterly. They're not something to be learned from, but it shows what I mean. Again, it might be just me.
Keep up with those value studies. They sure help a lot.

Rebeccak
03-05-2007, 07:05 AM
Strong stuff with these recent value exercises - keep pushing them further, and trying to see increasing subtleties of tone. With respect to the drawings, try to give the lines more breathing room - relax your strokes a bit, and allow form to 'breathe' - this may mean allowing for a bit of exaggeration in terms of length of strokes, etc., but that's not a bad thing aesthetically. :)

batte812
03-07-2007, 09:55 PM
Hi Rebecca, thanks for the comment. I need to loosen up my linework - still working on that.

Razz, thanks. I'm learning the basics of painting. I like that painterly style you use in your SB - it is better than blending too much. I did a basic exercise, without any blending. I went a bit further in detailing than intended, but i liked how it was turning out...

batte812
03-13-2007, 08:04 PM
Hi, thanks for the replies!

Johan, i'm glad you picked that one out. I guess i based myself on the traditional wooden "manneke" and on the Loomis model to develop this kind of gesture drawing. Steven Stahlberg uses a similar reduction to geometric forms to study shading in his tutorial on shading:
http://www.androidblues.com/JealousyStepbystep/jealousystep.html
So there are lots of resources to mix. Another important source is the form design, where i learned how important ellipses for the 3D structure of your drawing. By drawing the ellipses at the end end of the straight lines you give a lot of information on forshortening, tilting of the cylinder etc. But it takes some practice to get the ellipses right.

Glenn, thanks fot hte encouragement! I indeed get the feeling that my work is starting to pay off.

Hi....Batte 812...

Was just admirering those still life studies you did, and your impasto figure studies....Think it would be GREAT to see you put together a simple composition...maybe a man and woman sitting at a table, with a few still life objects on the table...maybe even a dog laying on the floor in the shadows next to the mans feet...would give you a chance to study composition, and put into practice what you have been studying...maybe even some fancy cloth on the figures..just a thought..you could use that impasto technique, and creat a whole painting, just expanding outward from the still life on the table top...maybe have that in candle light, and have the shadows in the painting get deeper as they move away from the still life...casting shadows and reflextions on the figures ect....would be a fun exercise, and you might be surprized at how much you have learned in doing those seperate studies..:)
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK...

In the mean time, while i was watching everyone Z-brushing and mudboxing, i picked up one of my experiments i did once. A basic model made in 3D Studio max, took it to Z-brush, "refined" the model, and back to max to render (Mental Ray has a great skin shader):

HEY ...Bart...

Just stopping by by to say ..THANKS FOR THOSE Z BRUSH LINKS that you just posted on my thread...GREAT HELP TO ME :bounce:
Also wanted to say that I like the last few things that you've posted,..that one cat in your drawings on the right upper side of that frame, has the dynamic that is in the RUBENS lion,..so you must have learned a little something while copying that RUBENS lion, and it is now appearing in your other drawings...WAY TO GO
I agree with you about trying real oils...nothing beats the feeling of actually pushing real paint around and into a real canvas..That same feeling will translate into your digital work also, ..once you experience it.
ANYWAY, mainly wanted to say THANKS,..those links will save me alot of frustration in Z BRUSH...FOR SURE....I checked out a few of them just now, pretty straight forward and easy to understand...going to make my life, sculpting and painting a lot easier...:) :bounce:

Spiritdreamer: i'm glad that you like the tutorials - they were very useful for me too. I would like to have some more time to experiment with ZBrush a bit further.
I'll keep on studying Rubens: it's great to see how he works with rythm, composition etc and how he goes so much further than capturing a mere ressemblance.

Bapke: thanks - the real credit goes to Zhaoming Wu (but i'm pretty happy with the result of the study as well).

Aviva: thanks!

Great updates Bart! Very good head sketch and paintings! I like those deer sketches! Very nice lines.
You want to learn to do oils? I used them for a few years. You would do best to take an oil painting class if/when you can. For now I would suggest that you pick up one of those oil painting kits at an art store with the included brushes. It will at least give you an idea if you like oils or not. If it isn't included in the kit pick up a palette knife. You will need it for blending the paint and also putting paint onto the canvas. Also you should probably get the canvas board to begin with for practice. You can get the prestretched canvas later on if you like or learn to stretch your own. Personally I enjoyed oils very much but the smell of the chemicals gave me headaches so I switched to acrylics and watercolor. Some of the things you will need are terpentine to clean the brushes and linseed oil to thin the paints as needed. A really good handsoap for cleaning your hands too. Some old rags for blending oils on the canvas. It's been awhile since I used oils so hopefully someone who is using them now will post more info. They are fun and since the paint takes a long time to dry you can fix mistakes hours later. I hope that helps a little.:)

Hi Samanthie, thanks for the explanation on the oil paints. I'm going to try them out during the hollidays to see how i like it. I found a book explaining the basics so that should do to start out. I still have some tubes of oil paint i bought some years ago, but i never used them. Hope if they're still good. And i'm still considering to follow drawing lessons. There's an open door day this weekend at the local academy, so i'm going to check it out.

Hey Bart,
I don't know in what city the academy is you are thinking to join. If it's in Leuven and you decide to take the "hogere graad" drawing classes there, I can strongly recommend choosing Peter Van Eyck's class... Learned heaps from this guy already.

Weet ook dat je opleidingscheques kunt kopen via de website van de vdab (vdab.be), waardoor je de helft van de prijs je opleiding in je zakken steekt ;)
Wel op tijd aanvragen en inschrijven dan!

Hi Flash, thanks for the nice words. The last two are from reference pics, as is most of my work. I should work more from life as it is an extra challenge...

Johan, i'm thinking of joining a local academy (Nijlen). I think i trally need to learn the basic techniques: how to work with charcoal, what paper to use etc. And let's see what else it'll bring...
Bedankt voor de tip ivm de opleidingscheques. Ik moet het nog uitzoeken, maar het kan me wel een deel geld besparen!

Wildsheepchase: thanks, for some reason the animal studies turn out much better than portraits and figure studies, allthough i didn't do that much animal studies. Anyway, i'll keep on practicing a variety of stuff, and one study will push the other, so hopefully all will balance in the end.

Hi Bart,
Good portrait studies. Love the old woman, very good shading and colors there. On the girl the shading is very dramatic which is also nice but there is something about her lower mouth area. The outward curves there could be less dark and more softly blended. The deer and the panda are just great and you know I am a fan of your animals! You've gotta do more!!

GREAT STUDIES...
Was thinking that if you haven't studied the animals of the ancient Chinese and Japanese MASTERS, that you should go to the library and check out some books on them. They had a really beautiful way of capturing the essense of the animal that they drew, with really beautiful elegant line and sometimes toned inkwash...Check out thier works if you have time and feel like it. I think you will find and recieve alot of inspiration in and from thier works..:)

Hi Bart,
More nice animal studies! Do you draw these from reference?
My guess is that humans are more difficult to draw because we have more preconceived notions about what a person should look like, as opposed to how they actually look. That's just my 2 cents, though. ;)

THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES!!!

Maulik: yes Tarzan and me we go back a long time:) About the paintings: i'm still at the very beginning, and there is a lot to be learned. As you said i should try to get more volume in.

Samanthie: thanks for the compliments. The pencil shading has some issues, thanks for pointing them out. And don't worry, more animals coming up soon!

Glenn: that's a good idea to check out the chinese dragons. I will do that.

Wildsheepchase: i work from ref pics to draw these anaimals. Google is a great place to fing them. You're right about drawing people: we are trained to analyze people in a detailed way; the smallest mistake in a drawing will make people look differently or deviating. The part that's more difficult in drawing animals is to get the perspective and forshortening right: they usually stand on four legs, and the body often is forshortened.

I worked out one of the pandas from the previous post:

Hi ...Bart...:)

I like what you are doing with the oils ...Great medium to master..:)
One thing that you might try when doing these paintings, is to search out your key color first...The key color is a color that runs throughout the scene, and acts like a unifying color element in the painting..like in the painting your working on with the boat in it, at sunset...Your key color would be the orange/peach color. Mix up a batch of that peach color, so that it is thin and transparent, and then tint the whole scene using that key color...let it dry...then when you paint with your other purples ect., they will have some of that key color , under them, shining through...you can also add that key color as a thin glaze on top of your other colors....This technique when mastered will unify your colors, and creat a luminous effect in your painting, making your painting and colors radiant,..which is what happens durning the peak moment of a great sunset or rise..Just one technique among many used to capture that magicial effect...thought it worth mentioning, in case you weren't aware of it yet..:)
Anyway ...Great to see you exploring oils,...they can't be beat ..

Hi ...Bart ...:)

I REALLY LIKE that palette knife painting...:applause:
You might try loading your brushes with thick paint, just like you did with the palette knife, and see if you can achieve the same effect with a brush...Try different types of brushes, hard, soft, flat, round, stiff, , ect..You might use a soft round one for the face, and then a stiff flat one for the cloths...try different combinations...makes your paintigs more exciting to view.. pushing the colors around and into each other like thick cake frosting, just as you did with the palette knife..I once had a painting teacher who taught us to use the oils like that,..when that technique is mastered, you can end up with some really beautiful works.., and it allows you to develope your brush strokes/work in a personal style that is unique to you...kind of like handwriting and your own signature..unique to each person...brush work is the same way as that..just like a fingerprint..no two peoples are alike...Just some passing thoughts that might be of help to you as you explore oils..:)
Keep up the GREAT work and PROGRESS ..Bart....really looking forward to seeing more.

Hi Batte,
on this evniromental paintings... I think they have not much depth. So the nearer something is in you image ... you should use red or yellow ... this are colors of presence. Use blue for the colors far far away ... when you are coming closer to the horizon line try also to get brighter ... so the horizion line is near to white ... you must work with the values and the saturation :)

I hope this helps a little?

Keep at it!

Hi Trunks, thanks for your opinion; i thought i was trying to work with saturation and valus as you described, but i see now i can push it much further. I will work on that.

I've been watching some videos of Glen Vilppu. It's amazin to see how he uses his pencil. So i've been working on my lines a bit more. It was confusing me at the beginning, but i think i'm improving finally. I used a color pencil, it has more friction on the paper so it gives better control.

I'm really fond of these last few sketches... much happening there and really good control shows

Lovely!

Hi Johan, thanks - i learned a lot from Vilppu that's for sure.
Here is one of my works i did at school. It's a typical assignment, done with charcoal:

Hi Johan, school is going well. I am learning a lot of new things. The most important is working with charcoal and working on a A1 sheet. It takes some time to get used to it. We are doing a lot of still lifes right now, with a focus on perspective and measuring. Some are in pencil, others with color pencil, and the rest in charcoal. I am doing a lot of exercises i wouldn't do at home and it's interesting to learn with other people, to herar their opinion and to see how they progress as well.

Here's a little exercise, done with red, yellow and blue color pencils (a warm variant and a cold one from each), no black or grey or green...

Hi Bart, really lovely work on the apples. I work with colored pencils and I like how you got the colors to blend so nicely and still have a great texture! I think your cows are cute. What really stands out to me is your sketch of the pumpkins. Nice charcoal work!
The face of the woman sitting next to the door in pink pencil could use a little more definition and her foot in relation to the leg/shin seems as if it needs to turn inward more. Your gesture drawings in red (your Glen Vilppu studies) are very well done!

Hi Debbie, thanks for your comment. I"m glad you like the charcoal work - charcoal is relatively new to me so i still have to practice more with it, but it's an interesting medium.

Her is some more work from art academy. We learned to work with conte crayons (whinte, black and two shades of brown). The paper is white paper colored with bistre (a brownish powder solved in water). It is a cheap and easy way to make colored paper.

Hi ..Bart..:)

Just stopping by to see what you've been up to lately...:)
I really like the conte crayon study of the hand bag...came out GREAT:applause:
Also really like the apples and coke cans...would be nice studies to do in oils, now that you have the feel for those subjects...just a passing thought..:)
Keep up the figure studies...you are getting a pretty good feel for those also...you might try doing a couple of characters from real life also...just a little something/action/relaxed gesture, or whatever,... that you can then put into an oil painting scene/composition..Just something in oils to practice your shading and rendering skills on, in oils...Maybe someone, or even yourself done from/with a mirror, or even better yet, reflexted in a mirror, sitting at a table or whatever, eating an apple and drinking a can of coke..things that you are already familar with...GREAT WAY, to practice with your oils..:)
ANYWAY,...Keep up the great work, and PROGRESS, and keep posting that school work, always a pleasure seeing it...

Hi Glenn, thanks for the reply! I'm glad you like my school works. I don't have the occasion to paint too much for now: it's a bit cold in my workshopduring the winter, so i'll have to let it rest for a while. As you can see i discovered pastells to explore some more colors. So i continue to explore the matter.

Hi Trunks, thanks! I've been working a lot on my linework - i'm glad to hear it's improving.

Here are some more works from school:

Still life done with pencil:

Some oranges; pastell

http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/1152/bartovan348jj2.jpg

This was done with charcoal powder resolved in terpentine. It smelss terrible but it gives some interesting results. I used various painting brushes to put it on. Details were added afterwards with an ordinary charcoal stick.

I like the recent figure drawing stuff you've posted here. How did you find the class? I've never been to a live figure drawing class before, but would like to try here in the city this winter if possible.

I too really liked the oranges piece as well. Did you enjoy working with pastels? I've dabbled with them a bit, but never with any great success. I get the sense one really needs to know their colour theory pretty well in order to make them work.

Oh man I still have to wait at least 4 months before we start drawing from live models...
We've started working on large format though, which is nice (about 70cm x 100cm).

I really like working in different mediums so i am really enjoying going through your sketchbook! Its awesome to see pastels, color pencils, charcoal mixed with terpentine WOOAW:bounce:

blending of pastels is fabulous!!!but it looks tomato to me ;)
and yupps the purple gesture study is very well done!!!
but the live figure drawings look like done in hurry...the strokes the proportions and the construction i see in the purple color gesture study are wondeful and the same is bit missing from live figure studies:curious: (http://forums.cgsociety.org/misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)

Hi Glenn, thanks! The landscape was done from a ref pic i made myself. I'm glad how it all turned out

Fifty3dragons: the figure drawing sessions are a part of my usual classes. I attend the local academy here, it's two evenings a week and occasionally we have live drawing classes.
I liked working with the pastels. In the beginning we could only work with the three basic colors, red, blue and yellow - each in a warm and a cold varation (that's how i did the apples and the tin cans a few pages back). Use complementary colors to create shadows (do not just add black). Those are a few practical tips to get started.

Hi Johan, yes there seem to be serious differences in academies. In our classes there is not much difference between the years. Only the first year is a bit apart from the rest, but sometimes we do the same assignments. Fortunately we could join the model drawing session.

Hi CgIcecube, thanks for the comment. The colors of the oranges are a bit off;
The poses in the live drawing classes are only 10 to 15 minutes so we have to rus things a bit. And they are done with a graphite pencil instead of the color pencil i use at home. The color pencil has more grip on the paper. And you have to give more pressure to get a line on paper. It seems to work better for me.

I have some more color pencil figures. The last one is from imagination.

Great work on the arachnids and insects! It's amazing how studying the creepy crawlies can make you feel less creeped out by them. I wasn’t fond of bugs until I studied them under a microscope. Now I save my cringes for poisonous spiders only.

I hope your eye is fully recovered! I look forward to seeing more of your work. :)

Argh Tessa I'm too scared of them to study them! :argh:
Yesterday a bee flew into our living room and I was hiding in the bedroom until my girlfriend had taken it outside...

I can kill dino's and monsters but I'm shittin my pants when it comes to insects... I'm such a freak lol

Anyway, thanks for the advise Bart and Tessa, I will try to overcome my fear... soon (LOL)

Hi Tessa, thanks for the reply! My eye is recovering weel; still some deformations and it's going to take a few more months befor it is completely heale, but i have good hopes.Hi Johan, you really should try to overcome your fear, if it's that bad! Anyway, no more insects for now in my SB.
I have been studying the belgian painter Michaël Borremans a bit. The heads are taken from his work and i made up the composition myself, influenced by Borremans.
Hope you like...

Hi...BART

I like your latest gesture studies..your line is getting a nice flow to it.
Maybe try to create little two and three figure compositions with your figures, having them interact and react with each other as you do these gesture studies...This exercise will strenthen your eye for composition as you progress with your line work...When you get a composition that is pleasing to your eye, maybe turn it into a digital painting, or even a traditional pastel, like that DEGAS one you did a couple of pages back in here ...Just a couple of passing thoughts as I was going through your sketchbook..thought them worth mentioning.
I also enjoyed those insects...I used to collect every bug I could catch when I was a kid..I had a huge collection..LOL,..AND I ALSO DID ALOT OF DRAWINGS AND STUDIES FROM THEM.
Anyway, keep up the GREAT progress...A real pleasure to see it.
TAKE CARE
Glenn

Konrad, thanks. Insects have interesting shapes, so it is a very good exercice in perspective.

Glenn, thanks for the kind words; it is indeed a good exercice to draw more than one figure. And it is a challenge too: there is less room for correction once ou laid out the first figure. Here are some of my trials:

.. nice updates,
just a little tip - for improving/practicing the linework - there are also very simple exercises that may do a real magic: drawing the simpliest shapes possible - elipses, waves etc..

Hi Johan, thanks. Yes still going to school two evenings a week. There are some life drawing lessons planned later on; as for now we only had a few portrait lessons with a model.

Hi Alenah, thanks for the tip! I was already doing some ellipses to warm up - but now i pay more attention to the linework. And i added a bunch of new patterns. I'll post some next time.

Hi Bart,

Great sketchbook! I just saw every page all the way to page 1, and I could really tell the improvements you have made over last couple of years. I really like your animal, insect, and robot sketches. The hand studies on this page are great, too.

I wondered why some of your skulls had a thin band around them. At first, I assumed they must have been a guildeline of sort to help you get the roundness of the skull. Well, I found my answer in the first page. May I suggest leaving out that seam in your future studies, as most of our skulls don't open up like the one from your references? I think it draws a lot of unnecessary attention, and the ones without it looks more natural, imo.

Looking forward to seeing more, keep it up. :)

Hi Heozart, thanks for the reply! You're right about the skull, i just copied the reference picture; it would be more elegant to leave that cut line out.

Here is a little airplane:
